- Classic Nostalgic 16-bit RPG
- XBOX360, PC, Mac, Linux & Dreamcast
Hm interesting...

I wonder, will this pass as a XBLA game with achievements or just XBLIG? o.o

It's a bit steep, but I think it has a chance if it picks up some momentum. A lot of projects have a lower initial goal but then add things like Linux and Mac as "stretch goals" tied to higher amounts, whereas this has them (and Dreamcast!) from the start, which I think will work in its favor. This is also a developer with an established customer base that was willing to pay something like $60-70 for the original 16-bit version.

edit: just saw that someone claimed the $3000 pledge, and it's already past $10,000 total.

Oh, $10,000 already, wasn't expecting that much support. Dreamcast boost maybe? Well, I don't mind being wrong in this case.

Graphics are very odd. I was thinking the more pixely stuff is just there as placeholders, but it's actually supposed to look like this:

Image

I'm sorry, but that just looks jarring and stupid. Even more so because the graphics that are in HD are of really good quality.

It's not though:
When we first sat down to conceptualize Pier Solar HD, one of our initial goals was to adapt the new HD art direction with our preexisting 16-bit gameplay. We did this by merging the rich charm of retro sprites with crisp HD backgrounds. The sharp blend of each art style unites to provide an enchanting, aesthetic atmosphere never before seen. Sure, other developers have made "modernized" retro, pixel based games - but as far as we know, never before has a game been developed entirely with a mixture of both art styles, from beginning to end. This is one of the most exciting aspects of Pier Solar HD and we think it is going to send every player straight to retro heaven.
Yeah there's a reason why it hasn't been done before, it looks like trash.

That's loltastic. Stupid indie retro-fetishism at its finest, my friends.

Ok, that is just dumb. Not buying.

Games didn't use lo-res for artistic reasons but because of technical limitations in the days of 8 and 16bit.

They've hinted in comments at having a mode with just the classic assets, but it was just in the form of "we'll be posting something on that asap" in response to a question about it, which could mean several things (e.g. that it's a "stretch goal").

This right here just an indications a lack of understanding of remastering graphics. No compromises, either the old graphics or the new.

I would be interested in this if you could turn off the remastered graphics.

That's not a good thing.

Damn. I was hoping for full HD port.... I hope they will consider that. Or do it like Monkey Island Special HD, where player can switch between original art and HD art.

I really hope they do like that. This mixture looks horrible! if this is what it will look like I will just stick with my Genesis copy.

That looks ridiculous - do not want. So they're doing the hardest bit in HD, and the easy stuff in blocky style? Sigh. Indies.

It's a year away (might yet beat Sturmwind though...). Will probably wait and see how it pans out before deciding whether to go MD regular print or DC.

The only thing I could find useful with this is the DC version. At 480p I could just add the scanlines back in and make use of the new art assets without the plastered on look. Plus it could be wide screen also on the DC. I've done this with Cave 360 ports and it worked fine. I already have my setup like this so it wouldn't be a hassle for me.

Still... it's kinda dumb.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Wow, this looks really awful.

I still haven't played my copy of the game, even though I paid the preorder in 2008-ish.

I plan to get it since I liked the original. I'd like some more PC-DC comparisons though; I prefer console but downgrading an HD game to 480p scares me.

Slam their Kickstarter page with the criticism on the half-assed HD treatment and I'm sure they'll turn around and do the whole lot.

I'd be very concerned if they stopped listening to the people, considering this whole thing started on a certain forum as "Tavern RPG" starring Steve Snake and various forum members.

Personally, I think HD is the devil when it comes to retro. Kinda defeats the purpose in my opinion.
