Video games in "The Shield"
Watched only the first season as I don't want to see another decent show getting run into the ground by the vicious circle of supply and demand (TV really isn't my thing), but I just found some intriguing pattern. When the assault squad does the raid thing, felons and their comrades are sometimes depicted playing video games. I remember Crazy Taxi (drug dealer's girlfriend in the pilot episode) and Halo ("rebelious" Korean teenagers).
Is it one of the show's distinguishing marks, or did it just happen twice?

Amazing: In modern society, people play video games. In TV shows and movies depicting modern society, people are shown playing video games.

Re: Video games in "The Shield"
I don't see modern society people playing video games a lot and I understand that cops tend to strike when people are laid back, but neither are scenes like those two something I see in films frequently. Only Virtua Cop in Assassin(s) comes to mind right now.

Off topic, I remember a Law & Orden episode were one of the main characters shows a Anime poster hanging on her house and said "I like anime, love the aesthetic"
I bet there's a scene with people playing FPSs or something like that in every stupid teenage movie .
In Jean-Reno's Wasabi, there's someone playing IIDX.

In TV shows, too. It's nothing special at all anymore.KAI wrote: I bet there's a scene with people playing FPSs or something like that in every stupid teenage movie .

Re: Video games in "The Shield"
It's not really a 'thing' as such. The Shield's all about the realism - supposedly - so yeah, some dudes are playing videogames when they're raided.
Re: Video games in "The Shield"
On several episodes of Walker Texas Ranger and shaquille o'neal's Steel, drug/weapon dealers and gangs are "working" in arcade places. Ahhh the 90's.

Uhh, I'm pretty sure that's also wrong and creepy.

Watch the whole motherfucking thing - seriously. Speaking as someone who hates seeing series (tv, game, whatever) senselessly milked dry, The Shield truly gets better with each season. The first half is an entertaining villain-of-the-week show about corrupt cops, the second is a masterpiece of the "ever-intensifying shitstorm" crime drama as Vic's playhouse begins to crumble. Plus more corrupt cop antics.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Watched only the first season as I don't want to see another decent show getting run into the ground by the vicious circle of supply and demand (TV really isn't my thing)

Re: Video games in "The Shield"
I think I know what intrigued me. The games in discussion were showed as features, so I could tell what games they were. It was probably easier than showing the videogaming people as such in a convincing way.
Sometimes "acting busy" is trickier to get right than "proper" acting. When the office staff in The Shield was supposedly busy struggling with inundation (just a second or two), it looked fake. I sort of understand why Herzog tried to shot his films out in the wild, starring people actually struggling with things.

That I remember it fondly after all these years is a good sign. That - according to neo-Nazi gematria - 88 (the number of episodes, apparently) stands for "Heil Hitler!" is probably just a coincidence...Watch the whole motherfucking thing - seriously.

Re: Video games in "The Shield"
Agreed... I watched The Shield in it's entirety over the summer. Was great... very gritty. Then, when you're done, watch The Wire. Then, you're done with good cop shows as far as I can remember.

Re: Video games in "The Shield"
There was an episode of something I saw once (X-Files?) where the protaganists visit some army guy guarding some base or something. He was playing Halo. When they interrupted him, he said, "I was about to beat my high score."

I didn't realize it before, but the guy is playing on the final level of Doom II. Then it shows him on the first stage, then on stage 7 and then on the final stage again.Vexorg wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZt0fAZ018E

Don't forget the ridiculous episode with the nerdy programmer guy who accidentally programs a killer babe AI into the game. Re: Video games in "The Shield"
It was the second loop!
Re: Video games in "The Shield"
If I played like that, I'd expect to be making the third loop in no time at all.
I almost wonder that it would have been more realistic if they showed him trying to play Tournament Quake, but then the music track ends and the game hangs while the CD seeks for the entirety of the fight, but he's just like "huh is it zombies again"
No, nevermind, that's a shitty idea if ever I had one. But still true in its own way.
So this game got dual stick configurations right, and cabinets with headphone jacks are awesome (BIG RED BAY-BEE). So are we in next for a special hyper velocity turbo DOOM puncher 3, the game where the levels are made up and the points* don't matter!
