Recommended Anime/Manga?

I sense sarcasm but seems as how I've never seen The Room I can't really comment, I'm presuming it's probably something slagging me for saying I hate all the modern cutesy stuff when I like Gunbuster.

Well contradictory as it may be, I didn't mind it in Gunbuster and can't seem to stomach it in much else.

The least of Gunbuster's problems is the character design, but it's there.
See, fanservice (in the most low brow sense) takes compassion so to speak. Heck, I can't find the English word without any connotations of pain. Say what you will about Slut Girl, but you can tell the author is into women. Similarily, you can tell Rumiko Takahashi is into men. There's no such admiration for girls (or human beings, generally speaking) to be found in Gunbuster on the graphical level.
That I realised yesterday how those hachimaki service shots make Norkio look like the femme fatale of The Room is more of my personal problem. Can't unsee either. Oh well.
I sort of recommend The Room. It's like The Divine Nymph (I mentioned regarding RahXephon) remake made of garbage.
Another anime where I found service shots oddly rigid is Uta∽Kata, but I recommend this one very much. Thankfully the OTHER problems of Gunbuster are absent here.

What makes Slut Girl so much better than you average porn? Facial expressions and "body language" - things human beings use to communicate stuff - are very well drawn. Can't say the same about Gunbuster.

The Room is just a bad film. Unrequited love story. What intrigued me about it was the way it tried hard to be European. Tommy Wiseau's bad English didn't do much for me as it's not my first language, but everything else was... punchy enough.

I'm NOT watching Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion at all.
I'm also NOT watching Utena, but that's more to do with my wryness against manga & anime where girls are not ALLOWED to look prettier than boys. When artists don't have got the knack of drawing pretty girls (see Naruto), that's not my problem, but when it's arbitrary, I disembark.

The Room is a pretty funny movie, in that it does absolutely everything wrong. It's shot on two completely different types of cameras, the script is stilted and awkward, the main character is about as Mary Sue as they come, his acting and English is bizarre and surreal at times, and the plot introduces and abandons plot points and characters almost as soon as they are introduced.

It's a pretty magical experience, altogether.

I've been toying with the idea of watching the famed Genocyber, but I'm worried the anime might be a bit too hardcore for me. Maybe something softer, like Guy: Double Target, MD Geist, or Angel Cop or something.

Then again, now that i'm watching a few clips, Angel Cop might be right up my fuckin' alley.

Anything manga uk does is usually a winner in my book.

Guy is fairly harrcore in the first episode, so I dunno if I'd recommend it to someone concerned with content. It's a very well-produced adult OAV, though, featuring Yamadera Kouichi as the titular character (big name seiyuu)

However, all the extreme gore and child-violence of Genocyber makes me hesitate to go through watching it, whereas nameless mooks and goons getting shredded in Angel Cop and Guy is at least a bit more palatable.

god I'm glad you made me further examine Genocyber before watching it - sounds pretty horrible, I don't think I could handle it haha - I dont like anything involving surgery or such like

Out of the blue, Spelunky thread gave me an example of what was missing in Gunbuster. This is about women. Gunbuster is not and I can only hope those characters don't have any unpleasant surprise down there to give.

Hotarubi no mori e: not my kind of thing but it was nice to watch
Un Go - causality: this was weird but in a good way, need to do some research on these episodes

Variable Geo: i didn't get the story due to no subs or dubbed, lucky it was only 3 episodes...
Tenjou Tenge: 24 episodes, 2 OVAs and the Movie, which was a waste of time

Yeah, just stop after book 13 or so. Orrrrr, you could continue reading up until about the mid 20s, but then you'll be introduced to a bunch of characters that you'll eventually hate. At this point in time it's almost unreadable garbage; absolutely the same as every other fucking action manga around with tons of silly comedy and exaggerated emotions. Yet I still buy it, mainly because I've already dedicated so much time and money to it I feel like I should at least keep going to get closure--or something. Book 35 has been out for a year and I still can't bring myself to finish it. It's pretty horrid.

Also watched Devil Hunter Yohko all 6 episodes, old but fun to watch...

I don't understand how anime from the 90s is "old but fun" in a videogame forum for games primarily from the 90s...

I watched the first two eps of Angel Cop.

Pretty enjoyable, even if the gore is a bit over the top. It's worth it for lines like "HE'S A FUCKIN' LOBSTER!"
That's some genius dubbing right there.

Though while the dubbing is at times painful (Raiden - oh wait, I mean Ray-den; as well as that little girl's voice... wtf?), it's not consistently bad enough to be continuously mockable. Though we'll see how things go in the later episodes.

Right now, I'm kind of wishing it were a bit more ridiculous, because it's fairly straight-laced at this point. Though the drag-queen Sharon Stone lookalike was only just introduced, so things might change now. I'm looking forward to more episodes.

Also, Angel herself gets some points for quite possibly being the most unlikable protagonist I've seen in an anime since Light Yagami. In my mind I contrasted her to Leona Ozaki of Tank Police. Both are certifiably insane police-women in cyber dystopias, but Leona is lovable enough, and ultimately good-hearted enough to root for. This is not the case with Angel. Probably because the show is much more 'hardcore', but the way she callously kills her enemies is kind of like "wow, what a bitch." Tank Police can pull it off because there's no major violence to speak of. Angel Cop, well, it has to be the "mature" one, but the result is a bunch of characters who are incredibly immature. Ha.

ok I'm on episode 6 of Cosmo Warrior Zero and while the overarching plot seems to be sorta shitty, Harlock in and of himself and his coolness in it is enough for me to recommend it - Tochiro's character is just weird, funny but I'm not really sure what I think of this rendition of him.

Death Note went downhill after the first volume. Good premise that degenerates into a random shounen.

Just two more chapters till the end of Blade of the Immortal. Good time for disgruntled Berserk fans to hop in!

I had watched Death Note first when it aired on adult swim, but I decided to marathon it again this week. I agree, it starts strong and roller-coasters around for a while, overall I still love the show. Mellow and Near weren't nearly as developed as L which was unfortunate. I still sorta like how it was wrapped up, though I'm probably in the minority. Great OST throughout.

I also finished Master Keaton a little while back, a GEM of a series. If you enjoyed MONSTER, definitely check it out, I highly recommend it if you enjoy more of a mature drama.

I do like how it was wrapped up, but I felt as if it just lost it's flow after L died. And yeah, the lack of development of Mellow and Near was disappointing, and probably would have made the latter half much better if they had been properly developed.
