Sort of. They're the middle ground between the 990 and 770. 770 tend to be good for monitoring while 990 have monster bass. To me the 880s are the sweet spot. 600ohm version is considered the best and marketed by Beyer as the "audiophile" version.

oh I c - I kinda found the 770s more hyped in the bass area - but I suppose that's because they were closed backs. I got the 990s as openbacks have less dramatic stereo staging etc./closer to speakers so better for mixdown etc. - I do think my stereo balancing did improve a bit once I got them.

One thing I have to say about both 990s and 770s is the build quality is amazing, mine have lasted ages and have had more than a few serious drops onto hard surfaces.
