Can someone capture a screenshot from ff12 for me?

Post by BazookaBen »

Can anyone with the proper equipment, or who has a PS2 emulator on their PC, capture the FF12 "screen postion" screen (with the reference bar for adjusting brightness) from the config menu? I'm having calibration issues with some my TV and would like to run the same screen from my computer instead of PS3. I'm trying to isolate if my problem is with the source or with the display.

I can't provide you with that, but I could probably get proper test patters for you.

I have test patterns loaded on my PS3 and they're coming out right, but for some reason I can't bring out the deep black when playing ff12 on it. I'm playing over component on an SD set, so the HDMI deep color options aren't the issue.

But do you have a way of outputting that image to the TV to the same format as the PS2 uses (or the PS3 uses, for playing PS2 games)? Hope it matches up but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

This might be just as useful:

There's a CPS2 grid pattern in there. And you'll be assured of running it at the same rez.

So I have another request for anyone with a PS2 (I don't have access to mine right now). If you can, bring up this screen in game and see if it matches the one captured by KAI. As you can see in his post, there should be three different shades of black to the left of the red line. Let me know if you can see those shades on your PS2.

I ask this because I think I've figured out where the problem is occurring. I'm trying to play ff12 with PS3 over component on an SDTV. I can't see any contrast to the left of the red line or on the far end of the white side while in the game. However, I loaded KAI's image onto my PS3's hard drive and viewed it in the XMB, and I was able to see the full range of contrast. I was also able to see the full range when I displayed the image via my PC through component cables. So the issue is not with my TV OR the PS3's DAC itself. I should also mention that when I play via HDMI on an HD set, I can see the full range as well (just don't like the upscaled blurriness).

This leads me to believe that when the PS3 (BC model) is playing PS2 games through an analog output, it is clipping deep blacks and bright whites. I'm wondering if this occurs on the PS2 as well, in which case there must be some issue with digital to analog conversion in the emotion engine (IF it does this it all, as the DAC is separate on lots of hardware). If the clipping doesn't occur on a PS2 then it is a problem specific to the PS3 and it's processing of emotion engine video. I imagine it's the latter, as we already know about the lag issue with PS3's playing PS2 and PS1 games.

Think this would be a decent alternative to the 240p test package? I don't have a DC yet and want to config my screen. Turns out the AES game I used before was far too wide.

It's a 512x448 picture...how are you going to squeeze it into 240p?

Here's a secret: Your different sources may require some different configuration settings. A newer system (dunno if the DC is new enough) might offer some screen configuration settings that will let you leave the TV's settings alone, but an older source like the AES won't, and might require a setting different from everything else.

What do you mean about too wide, anyway - if you couldn't fit the entire image onscreen at one time, even using simple repositioning, it could just be that your TV has the overscan setting quite high (which I've read is kind of common with TVs), and that would just require that setting to be pulled back to something more reasonable.

Great news! This should mean I can play this game in full color in SD once I get my PS2 back in commission. Then I'm going to ditch my BC PS3 and grab one of the efficient newer models. There are too many issues when playing old games on this thing.

Used Metal Slug X for what I was thinking of.

Still need to adjust it a little more though..
