Not sure if any of you guys have seen this one yet:

http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000687017

To be fair, it is a rarity, but almost $18,000 for a crap game seems beyond ludicrous to me. There are still 6 days left, though, so place your bids!

Good Crom, that's going to get so absurdly (more) expensive fast. Videogame collecting makes me feel weird sometimes.

this actually isn't insane, but I didn't want to start a new thread. Another copy of Air-Raid for Atari 2600 has been found, is complete, and is the first to prove that a manual exists. at $16K now with 4 days left:
http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000687017

The last one, now known to be incomplete, went for ~$30k

edit:
just now seeing this has been recently posted.

Wow, nice! I had forgotten that the ridiculous game collecting prices were that high before the last year or so that they have really taken off.

I love how that cnn article tries to take the credit, jackasses.

I think he may have gotten lucky with that $30k without a manual. another like that recently sold for only $14K:
http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_sacat=0 ... te=1&rt=nc

we'll soon see what that manual may be worth.

edit: not much more. It all went for $33433.30.

Considering that there was no licensing process for Atari 2600 and that by 1982 everyone and their dog started to flood the market with crap (like the game in question, which is what caused the crash), I'm surprised anyone would offer this much for a no-name ksogame by some random startup company of which there were literally hundreds back then which sprang up like mushrooms and vanished just as quickly. If this was an official game that for some reason existed only in miniscule numbers, I would kind of understand it (while still considering it crazy), but this makes no sense at all.

Another case of more money than brains, it would seem.

strangely enough, he's also selling a cps2 Xmen vs street fighter A+B board for $60 with free shipping.

odd contrast.

HUGE FUCKING BONER

Somewhat relevant to the spirit of this topic, stumbled over this Eurogamer article on "the fraud of retro gaming" tonight while digging around for info on MD/SFC obscurities I've yet to try.

I wonder how many other "retro gamers" are in the same pathological boat as that guy. I'm not kidding, every time I play AS Leynos I get a monstrous nerdboner. Game's rad. If it made my nerdboner soft and floppy like cheese, the way Dracula XX does, I'd give it the boot and enjoy the extra shelf space. Actually I wouldn't need to, as I'd have deleted its ROM and forgotten about it (like Dracula XX). "The chase is better than the catch" is hardly a novel concept but it seems particularly pathetic when applied to this hobby, certainly when the complainant sounds as tormented as this guy.
The drug which fuels my maddening desire to own a complete collection of every Neo Geo Pocket title released in the UK is nothing less than pure, undistilled nostalgia.
LOL. How about just getting games you enjoy owning and saying screw the rest? Healthy attitude to life in general, that.

^ If you ever needed more of an admission of someone in a position of influence who doesn't understand their own specialist subject, there you go. Retro gaming (ugh) isn't only about acquisition and nostalgia, it's about playing better fucking games than they make today.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Chomakaimura to finally put to death.

Hrmmm ... The fact that the rental program never happened and these posters were never used ... I feel like it makes this basically worthless.

I think if there actually was a rental program and the posters had seen some use, then the posters would be recognizable and more desirable. Like, "Oh wow my local mom & pop video store used to have one of those in the window!"

Then again, prototypes and other items that were never in commercial use do often sell for gobs of money, so what do I know.

Dion achieved notoriety some time back for thinking he had legal rights to the Neo Geo franchise (courts decided he didn't and sided with the real owners of the IP, which is what that "former" bit is about). Also apparently thought that his group's "Freaked" reprints of the box inserts were better than the real thing, and it was alleged they destroyed some originals to put the new ones with their own logo on them just to prove a point. Also they supposedly had original art files to work with. THE PLOT THICKENS!?

Not well respected by the collecting community at which his efforts were focused.

If it actually was printed up during the retail days of the Neo Geo, it'd be valuable, regardless of whether it happened or not. Yeah, I agree that the visibility is an issue, but a lot of people know what the Neo Geo was and a fair number recognize that stupid dog tag logo. But things got pretty crazy near the end of classic SNK's run around 2001, and as the Neo Geo Freak debacle showed, not everybody's claim that they represent the Neo Geo is legitimate.

The real problem here is that if the seller is Dion, there's no guarantee this isn't some shit they cooked up last month as a personal bailout. An authentication letter from them is not going to hold water with other people, even if it is "the real thing."

The Neo Geo community is so poisoned as a platform that even independent developers are sucked into irrelevant drama due to the problems and scams that have shown up from years of random people showing up and abusing the brand.

Originally made back in 1991 for a marketing campaign to allow select video and game rental stores to advertise that they offered the NeoGeo AES system for rent. The rental campaign never materialized and the "RENT NEO GEO" window displays were never sent out and were all discarded and thrown away. Or so that is what we all thought... until now...
How does one authenticate a sign advertising an event that never materialized? Was it publicized and scrapped? Or are buyers to take his word for it that this is a thing?

Regardless, that thing is hideous.

I edited my post, take a look at that.

Or better yet - A good wrapup of Dion Dakis shenanigans here at The Next Level website. Pictures of the Dion in all his Dakishness!

The thing to remember is that Dion Dakis is known to have no regard for history or the Japanese parent of the system and literally went to what I'll called "judicially sanctioned lengths" to assert an ownership of a brand he could never aspire to. So you've got this guy destroying shit, making stuff up as he goes, and then suddenly he turns around a decade later and discovers the one true grail of SNK history. The sad part is that it could indeed be true; I never got clear how it was he got the official artwork (unless he talked somebody into it) for SNK releases, and they did have a distribution deal with SNK. Regardless, it's quite easy to see the wheels turning, as this may very well fly under SNK's radar.

Racketboy tried interviewing him recently, and didn't bother fact checking him at all. Some commenters did their best to correct the unchallenged distortion of the record:
The SNK bootlegger story is [BULLSHIT]. Dion used his status as the buyer of the rights to SNK-USA distro to sell low quality (printwise) conversions (taking an MVS and an AES cart, de-soldering the chips by hand, and then swapping them) to hardcore neo geo fans and passing them off as SNK originals. His excuse was that because he had the rights and the chips used in the conversion were SNK that he was in the right. He sold these for $600-$700.

I don’t care about conversions one way or the other if they are fan made thats cool, an AES owner can play slug 1 without selling his case.. Thats cool, most conversions are fan made labors of love.

But when you try to sell conversions as the real deal thats douche territory. Dion may seem like a nice guy when you are kissing ass but he is a major douche to his detractors face to face.
People who are new to the hobby will never realize the years of thieving and lying that this cancer [Dakis] unleashed upon the Neo Geo community. All you have to do is Google “Dion Dakis Thief” to see a clear example of how Dion has lied and stolen money from not only online transactions, but also people he met directly in person. These interviews undermine the integrity of Racketboy by lending credence to the notion of Dion being any kind of Neo Geo expert. Whatever knowledge and possessions may be hidden within his storage vaults, the information gained is worthless as any veracity can not be distinguished from his innumerable lies.
The less attention Dion gets, the better. I’m not going to say I’ve lost respect for Racketboy or the community because of this; but I’m wondering why a known thief, liar, and scammer is getting this kind of attention. The biggest thing that stands out to me is how I lost count of how many times Dion keeps saying “and 10, 15 years later everyone is finally starting to catch on”; no, no they’re not Dion. Your “freaked” conversions/bootlegs were ALWAYS low print quality, even back then. They’re worth less than the genuine article. The guy’s ego is so over-inflated, he’s manipulative; and that clearly shines through in these videos. I’m surprised so many people have fallen for his BS just by looking at these comments. And no, I’m not from Neo-Geo.com.
Neo-Geo.com is known for the heated nature of its debate, but people have lost lots of money from this and never gotten any satisfaction. So the next time some idiot (like "Sound Lily" at the end of that comments thread) says "it's time to move on," remind them that Dakis owes people money with interest. Being scammed is something that just sits with you and burns for a long time, and it is especially sad when it's being done in such a way that makes the hand that feeds you (or the hands - in this case the Neo Geo community and SNK itself) look like the villain. Way to twist the knife, Dakis and Racketboy.
