The best models for 32" HD gaming (PC & Console) - low lag?

Post by fagin »

Guys,
Urgent advice required......

Need to know based on factual experience yourself or from decent on-line source, models of currently available brand new sets for the above.

Will be used for PC & console gaming only - not interested in any other use for this screen.

Let us know what you find! 32" is difficult. The size is abandoned by most manufacturers. In 27" there's the new S series Dell, which has zero input lag and a great looking IPS panel (and about roughly 5ms reaction time) - seems to be the new gaming wunderkind.

Perhaps I should quantify my requirement slightly more.......

I'm looking at building a driving simulator rig (using a racing sim set-up) and my space available means I can only go upto a 32" screen.... which regards to mounting, makes sense to stick at this size as a maximum. The rig will be predominantley used with either a 360 or PS3, but I suspect I will hook up my PC as well. No retro shizzle will apply with this set-up. 1080p will be the maximum resolution requirement.

Because of the size of the screen wanted, I won't even be comtemplating a monitor panel...... it will need to be a TV (VESA mountable). I appreciate this will mean some trade off in processing lag and response time etc. The plus side is that it won't cost anywhere near what a monitor would.

HDMI, VGA and Component will be good.

Change of tact..... going for a slightly smaller screen (27") and looking at a monitor now from BenQ GW2750HM. This is currently retailing for £199.99 in the UK and has been tested for lag at an average of 6ms.

That will do certainly at that price point.

I think to remember that Panasonic did have some pretty nice 32" sets in the past with only 1 to 1.5 frames of lag. But you're certainly looking at a price point at which you could get a 3x 24" setup - which is the prefered racing config anyway - I think.

Another issue is VESA compatibility.... which is a bit hit and miss at 32"'s. It's workable but it means I'll have to redrill the mounting bracket, which I really can't be arsed with. The added bonus of a monitor is the dsub availability...... the reduced lag is a major plus, so I can accept a reduction of 5"'s in the screen size. A 27" screen also reduces the footprint slightly which is another bonus.

This link maybe of use to others: http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?th ... se.145141/ (which is what I used as the basis for my decision in the end).

The review for the new 27" Dell will probably be up at TFTcentral next week. Today there was a german review and I was happily surprised to see a standard 100mm VESA mount on the 27" model. They also indicated a total delay (input lag + reaction time) of only 3ms - making this the fastest IPS monitor to date. The 27" has VGA, HDMI and DVI. It's priced at 320 EUR over here, so maybe 270 GBP on the isle ?

The 24" version was reviewed at TFTcentral already. Great display as well, but unfortunately without a VESA mount.

I'll pick up either one next month.

BenQ: I can't use monitors which use PWM for backlight dimming. Gives me headaches within minutes. If you're immune, the BenQ seems to be very nice though!

Even more decisions.... although the "gloss" screen is a bit of a bummer.

yes, that's the one. I've seen the vids. Bit concerned about the glossy glass front as well, but I'll just order one and check it out.

Do you have a specific model number for that? You've mentioned this a few times and I'm not sure I found the same one you were referring to.

The Asus is a TN panel. The only reason to buy that is if you really want to utilize the 120/144Hz refresh rates...

Dell S2440L and S2740L.

An interesting possibility is suggested by the lag numbers - current AMVA panels might be adding a milisecond of lag over AH-IPS. Of course, other causes of the additional lag can't be ruled out.
