It's been done!

Twice!

However in both cases, the dinosaurs are the enemy. I'd like to see a shmup where you play a dinosaur. Maybe a robot renegade dinosaur, or maybe some military in the future has cloned dinosaurs and fitted them with futuristic weapons to defeat an invading alien menace.

I'm pretty sure I don't want robo-dinos...I think. But you're right, dinos didn't exactly breath bullets.

Vaguely makes me think of a collaborative project I was working on a few years ago but never got close to finishing. Basically, it would've been sort of a 'build a monster' shmup where you would collect different body parts (body,head,tail,wings, etc.) as powerups. It got complicated pretty quickly, though. ;)

You could probably just do something like Scrambled Valkyrie where your ship swaps between several different 'forms' (dinosaurs in this case) which each have their own movement/firepower specialties. Another way would be to have a particular dinosaur available for certain types of stages.

As for the 'breathing bullets' thing, you could easily just have a rider doing all the shooting or have the dinos equipped with some kind of mounted weaponry (think back to those ridiculous Jurassic Park toy tie-ins.) Granted, you'd definitely still want some kind of ferocious 'bite' attack for maximum dino fun.

For some reason I'm thinking of Panzer Dragoon Orta and its dragon swapping styles. Not exactly a Dino, tho. You should go straight 80s weirdness. Dinosaurs for Hire, if you ever played that, comes to mind. Or the tabletop board game Gammarauders, where giant monsters were part of gangs. A giant cyber penguin vs a gun bear vs... All kind of other things. You should look that one up on boardgamegeek.com!

Hori or vert? Hori, right? Since dinos from above are crap?

So, after some thinking:
  • * You're a dino, fighting dinos in dino-time (whenever that is). So no metal add-ons.
    * Story: A comet crashed and sent magic dust making the dinos IQ increase and they got the ability to shoot (now we got that sorted, yay!). One of the dinos (you) rebel against the way of living that eventually would lead to the end of the world as they know it (which means you will ultimately fail, since they're extinct now...duh!).
    * A view like Golden Axe?
    * You pickup powerups that will gradually tranform you until you are the "ultimate black t-rex", the most powerful dino ever existed (like Rozyrgs suggestion: "tail power up", "head powerup", etc?)
    * Your eye is the hitbox.
    * 352x198 resolution.
Yay or nay?

Must...go...and...make...test...animation...for...t-rex.

Just saw this Green Beret/Russian Attack clone(?) in your sig :shock: Loved that one as a kid on C64, it was my first PCB I ever bought. Good times.

Not sure I like the idea with having robots as players though :P

Could always do something like Silk Worm with a T-Rex and a Pteranodon instead of a Jeep and a Helicopter.

It's a cross between GB/RnA and Psycho nics Oscar. That's why they're robos. And also, humans wouldn't stand the impact of the "fighting egg" like entrance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAVT9aUK ... age#t=171s). :twisted:

you could make it mushi style, insects replaced with dinos
or reverse mushi, where your the dino taking on humans that encroached it turf
or smash mushi, dinos fighting insects or vice versa....

plus you need to have a dragon blaze style dino shot (with a little hellsinker where dino hovers and fires, or homing for close kills)

Please oh please make every dino have a huge dino wail when they die/explode. Even that stock T-rex scream would do.

And this sounds amazing, I wholly approve of this idea.

havent played futari much, but isnt there only one dino and the main theme is still insects, right?
edit: I have a new idea, fuck cute em up, how about a cat em up :mrgreen:

Insects are amusingly in the minority. Out of all 5 stages, only stages 3/4 actually seem to feature noticable levels of insectoid fun.The whole first level has Dinosaurs... The second level is all crabs, turtles, squids and stuff. Level 5 has dragons.

The whole premise of Mushi seems to be that in the original game, Reco is actually fighting the bugs because they have some weird levitation energy that is toxic to humans so they're actually trying to be peaceful and co-exist by keeping the bugs out of human space.

Then Reco goes beyond the forest to see what lies beyond, finds floating islands, dinosaurs - before going back in to the forest to lay the fascist smack down on some bugs having taken her place amongst the monarchy of pest control - then for no apparent reason, takes a journey to dragon land to go and beat up Larsa who is apparently having a bit of a breakdown blaming Reco for a dude called Aki's death.

Basically - if that made any sense to you - you have consumed the correct quantities of exotic fruit.

One piece kind of exotic fruit??? 8) and no it didnt make much sense... well it did made more sense then hellsinkers story line..

As far as I know, the story in the first game is that there's this village that sacrifices someone every so often apparently to keep away the bugs (and subsequently their levitation energy which is poisonous to humans). As it turns out, there's no sacrifice, but rather the person who goes becomes the 'god' of the forest and basically keeps the bugs in check and controls them. At some point, Aki met Reco in the forest a while ago and gave him the bracelet symbolizing he was the 'god' (which also protects from poison) so that Reco wouldn't die from the poison she'd been near in the forest. By the time of the game itself when Reco meets Aki, the symbolic fight they have that makes Reco the new forest god is kind of meaningless as without the bracelet the poison was killing Aki anyways, something you learn in the ending, hence why Reco's crying over Aki's death.

In Futari, Palm's sent out to find Reco to presumably kill her(on the basis that Larsa thinks she murdered Aki in cold blood), but she explains what happened, they become friends, and he takes Reco back to his kingdom to explain what happened. By the time you get to Stage 3, they realize the insects are rampaging and destroying stuff like the village in Stage 4, something that's happened because Larsa's basically gone to war with the insects and is trying to wipe them out. The game is basically Reco and Palm trying to stop the fighting between the insects and Palm's kingdom that Larsa started out of her batshit craziness.

Futari's especially sad as the creatures from Stage 3 onwards are basically fighting for the wrong reasons and you end up having to kill them to stop them. Palm even begs the rest of the dragon riders at the Stage 5 midboss to stop fighting, that his mother's mislead them about Reco murdering Aki (to no avail of course).

You know that the word "dinosaur" is a substitute for the 1800's word "dragon", and a ton of cultures have legends of dragons.so theres your flying , fire breathing and co-existing humans. (dragon breed?). Just some random info.

That trailer looks pretty good! The "retro <inserttermhere>" is pretty lulz but I can see it being a good XBLIG title. :D
