Okay, jokes aside, I say shmup or 'arcade shooter' to people. Usually the latter, because even I think of CoD first when someone says 'console shooter', and this genre did start in the arcades so it makes sense.

Probably but I still think of them as being console shooters, if not because they're made to support consoles first then because almost none of my mates play CoD etc on PC - Halo is the main exception here cuz Halo 1 rocks socks, but the rest are always more popular here from the console versions.

I am hesitant to say "shmup," when I describe a genre to people as most of them will not understand it. When I say, "You know, like space invaders??!" the light bulb will go off in their head as to the type of game I refer to even though it's nowhere near the type of game I'm really imagining in my head. Shoot'em up to me is still reserved for Raiden... not unreal or CoD.

normally i just refer to specific game titles, or (in conversation) i just call them either shooters, arcade shooters, or shmups. if people start asking me about first person shooters, i tell them i don't play them.

also, some guy has started referring to me as "that one touhou guy" because i play touhou during the anime club... this probably is not a good thing.

CRT is a terrible choice for DOOM III - not that connoisseurs play DOOM III though.

It's mainly the flicker that is bad (I'll take screen tearing over flicker any day). Modern LCD monitors aren't too far off CRTs in the lag department, either.

I play Halo on a CRT. Looks good, until they start going all 16:9 on me and I can't see a damn thing.
