Germanism I believe. I'm pretty sure the word "s(c)hmuck" entered American English via Yiddish.SuperSoaker360 wrote:Actually thinking back to it, I have seen some people actually write it as "schmup" before.

Yeah, before going online I heard the three big arcade genres called shooters, brawlers, and fighters. I don't know why fighter is still in use while brawler became beat 'em up and shooter became shoot 'em up. Then shoot 'em up became shmup while beat 'em up didn't progress to bemup.Mero wrote:Before I found out about this place I'd never heard the term 'Shmup' before, I certainly don't remember hearing it back in the day.
Actually, thinking a little more, I think I heard "horizontal shooter" and "vertical shooter" more often then just shooter, and when disembodied gun fests moved from being known as "Doom clones" to "first-person shooters" that fit in pretty well. And "fighting game" was more common than just "fighter," yet I never heard "brawling game" in place of brawler.
I guess this all has more to do with language than with video games.

I think shoot-em-up came about as a way to distinguish shooter games with FPSes, though in my heart shooter will first-and-foremost refer to a STG.

Not according to what I've read here, if the term came about in the late '80s (possibly earlier). If anything it's confusing people who expect Contra to be a shoot 'em up (well, it is, isn't it?).EmperorIng wrote:I think shoot-em-up came about as a way to distinguish shooter games with FPSes

I resisted the term "shmup" as long as I could, mainly because I feel like an asshole every time I say it. Of course, that may just be because I'm an asshole.

Yeah, the term shoot 'em up was definitely in use in the second half of the 80's, before FPS's came on the scene.Ed Oscuro wrote:Not according to what I've read here, if the term came about in the late '80s (possibly earlier).EmperorIng wrote:I think shoot-em-up came about as a way to distinguish shooter games with FPSes
I remember reading ages ago that term was originally coined in the old C64 mag Zzap 64 at some point in the mid 80's, don't know if there's any truth to that.

That's certainly where I remember it from, and I grew up reading that mag so "shmup" is a quite normal word to me.Mero wrote:I remember reading ages ago that term was originally coined in the old C64 mag Zzap 64 at some point in the mid 80's, don't know if there's any truth to that.

'Jogos de Nave' sounds boss!
Though it's stg for me (or, as has been mentioned, shooter) - typing the word 'shmup' destroys a little bit of my soul everytime, caps or no motherfuckin' caps...
However, saying shmup out loud is unforgivable!

"STG" and "danmaku" are placed on the same shelf as typing "animé" and "moé".

Danmaku I can maybe understand, but why is STG there? It's an abbreviation for ShooTing Game.

Nonsense, STG is a perfectly fine abbreviation. Not to be confused with STD.
I never say "shmup" in real life, because it sounds dumb.

Re: "SHMUP". Yes, with that capitalization.
STG is dumb because not only does it not make sense as an English abbreviation but Japanese use it to refer to games other than just 2D shooters as well.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Re: "SHMUP". Yes, with that capitalization.
I my own case, I first learned them as space games, then when I bought a paperback book called "The Kid's Video Game Guide", they called them shoot-em-ups. I still called them shoot-em-ups or shooters for quite a while. I didn't actually learn about the term "shmup" until this site and Shmups.com.
First person shooters, I always call them "first person shooter" or FPS. I no longer call shmups space games since some use airplanes, tanks, or people as the object of the game that is able to shoot (and sometimes jump).

Re: "SHMUP". Yes, with that capitalization.
whenever I'm speaking to someone who obviously knows what a shmup is, referring to them as "shooters" is usually enough.
