I've been noticing that some people tend to type "SHMUP" in all caps.

Not that it really matters, but why that? It certainly as hell isn't an acronym...Shooting Hyper Ultra Mega Power?

and all-caps'd "shmup" certainly doesn't appear in Japanese publications like "BEMANI" etc. do (they use STG and シューティングゲーム (shooting game) instead) so that can't be the source; maybe a Western publication uses it?

I've seen quite a few "sh'mups", too. Perhaps they want to be properly grammatical and account for an omitted letter, but haven't noticed there are more.

Before I found out about this place I'd never heard the term 'Shmup' before, I certainly don't remember hearing it back in the day.

Since being on here I just assumed it was a piece of terminology that originated in the US (and thus wasn't exposed to it back then). Was I right?

Anyway, I don't use it myself, I usually go with STG (capitalized or not).
