To echo a sentiment from BP, I think most of us can agree that some release is better than no release. But all things being equal...

I'm fairly sure your not alone on wanting a west port of daioujou. I just want a port of mushi hd more that's all.
But a lot of people probably already bought the Japanese version.

On the point of disc vs download, I'll take whatever I can get.

Trust me you are not alone in your sentiment. I certainly would love to have DOJ receive a western release, even though they patched the hell out of it to fix it.

you are not alone, it's just never going to happen due to the legal issues surrounding that release. same issue with the ketsui port.

5pb's Ketsui port is completely legal. It was recoded all in-house. DOJ BLEX is the only game to feature stolen code and that's due to the company that 5pb chose as their outsourcing partner for the development.

I jump in and out of XBLA games wit no issues. Never takes minutes to find a game. Just a few menu switches and you're there.

I'm in the disc-release camp. Digital distribution is really unappealing to me because I consider it more of a rental of the software than actually owning the game.

I heard the company who stole it "Aqua Plus" stole the code out of Arika's Dumpster. Who would of thought Mihara would slip up like that?
A Hardcore gamers reaction to the Lack of Kinect games. Apparently i could of played Dodonpachi with it if i beat a entirely in Japanese Visual Novel piece of shit game called Instant Brain

Aqua Plus provided two services, the first was as a background coding company for whom larger companies would outsource projects or parts of projects to, and the second was as a vault for companies to store old source code if they didn't want to store it on their premises. Guess what game's source-code was sitting in their vault... yeah, Arika's PS2 port of DOJ.

I think having the option for both physical copies and digital downloads helps grant additional access to the software. Importantly, for a software (or game in this case) to gain interest and/or to be successful, it has to reach a broad amount of users that will gain interest in the software in the first place. With high demand and interest, it will be good for both the users and the developers/publishers, since physical copies are available in a limited amount (unless companies decide to print out new copies with added fees), it is always good to have other options available for those who can't seem to find that software anymore, or if it's hard finding it used and if it happens to gain a high rarity value on auctions for example. So being able to download the game is great, but then it will be attached to the account that you bought it with. ^^;

I guess what I'm trying to say is, more options is nice, but if there's a physical copy with box and manual available I'll gladly pick that one as my first option, and a digital download as a second option.

Same could be said with the 250GB drive. I've almost maxed it out and I keep my retail shmups installed on it too. I can't say that it takes "minutes" for games and lists to load, more like seconds. o.o

If this is true, how come Ketsui hasn't been released on GoD in Japan?

Because it hasn't? There are more reasons than "it's illeeeeeeeegal" to not have a game on GoD.

I also suspect 360 Ketsui's lack of redone HD graphics impacts is marketability, no matter how much the people who actually pay money for shmups don't care.

Does doj/ketsui look as bad as the futari or deathsmiles arcade modes? If so, that is bad...

I think DOJ is quite likely the ugliest STG. At least the ugliest in the past 20 years.

In regards to the ketsui port, iirc Arika found out about the doj code theft while the ketsui port was being "developed". The ketsui port was originally based on the unreleased ps2 ports code. Arika was surprisingly cool about the whole thing and stepped in and helped with the ketsui port. It would seem that there was a deal struck between the two companies so that ketsui could be released and arika got paid for their work. For whatever reason, there was never a "platinum hits" release, games on demand release, or overseas release.

Take all this with a grain of salt of course. Its been awhile since the whole episode and i dont have time to go re-read the thread.

Nowhere near as bad. They put some smoothing filter on it and it looks fine on an hdtv. Would have been nice to get hd sprites, but the ports are perfectly playable as is.

I'm sorry but you're beyond insane. DDP looks better but DOJ is anything but the ugliest STG, and it doesn't matter what timeframe you pick.

whaat

Mars Matrix is hideous. DOJ isn't too much of a looker because it has obvious prerendered CAVE sprites but it's not as ugly as Mars Matrix. Nothing is.

I think the issue with DOJ is more the color palette uses very muted tones, especially in the backgrounds. Makes it look rather dingy, unpleasant, but I'm pretty sure that was intended.

At least it has some sort of color design.

Mars Matrix just looks like vomit.

Mars Matrix is beautiful, aside from the ugly rendering itself. Try imagining it with higher quality images; that's amazing. Cannot say the same about DOJ.

Just watch the beginning of stage 2 and 3 for what I mean by "[it] has a nice aesthetic"

I hate the Donkey Kong Country style rendering in DOJ. I think the dark "industrial" theme was a good idea but poorly executed. Stage 1 starts of pretty strong with a nice background and great music, but everything else after that is bland. Stage 3 more or less doesn't even have a background. I prefer the artistic direction of all the other (Do)DonPachis over DOJ. DOJ is still a great game though, it's just in spite of the presentation.

Mars Matrix's stage 3 is the best stage.
