convert a Famicom stick for use on a AV Famicom or NES ?

I've got a Micomsoft XE-1 FC for the Famicom, which uses the old extension controller connector for use on the classic famicom systems. Has anyone any experience with converting a famicom stick for use on a NES (or AV Famicom). Do they use the same number of signal lines inside the controller cable ?
