Living in Japan for 4 months

Post by burgerkingdiamond »

I recently found out that I'm going to spend jan/2013 - may/2013 working in Yokosuka. I've been to Japan 3 separate times for 2-3 week stints, but I didn't get out very much since it was working out of a smaller town, and there wasn't a whole lot to do besides get drunk (I did get to Nagasaki one weekend though..)

I'm thinking about living in Yokohama, so I'll be closer to Tokyo and removed from the Navy presence in Yokosuka, but still close enough to get to work easily.

I'm already planning on hanging out with Rancor in tokyo here and there, but I want to really get as much out of this trip as possible.

So besides drinking/karaoke/arcades what else should I try to do while I'm there? I'd like to get a mix of Big City stuff as well as traditional Japan.

btw, I want to take a snowboarding trip one weekend if anyone wants to go.

Since you're in Yokohama, you could easily take a jet boat out to the Izu Islands. Round trip is less than $200, and you can witness island life here in Japan. We'll also have to check out Yasakuni Shrine. There's a fantastic WWII military hardware museum there, and it's where all the war criminals have been laid to rest! Maybe check out a K-pop concert at Budokan? Maybe someone like.. oh, I dunno.. 2pm?

.. But as you said - getting alcohol poisoning at a all-you-can-drink karaoke booth is a must. Maybe exporting a few cabs ain't such a bad idea either.

Oh - and I just thought about this one - Wanna see a dead body? 8)

We could have our own "Stand by Me" adventure and go search for dead bodies in the suicide forest. I'll even let you be Wil Wheaton - I'll be the fat kid.. haha..

I've always wondered how much loose currency there is floating around Aokigahara. Or do people that plan their suicide so meticulously just not leave any leftover bills in their wallet/purse?

The easiest trip is Gala Yuzawa, although the mountain isn't the best. If you want a better mountain, Hakuba is good, but takes a bit longer.

Thanks GP. I'm gonna check those out. One bad thing about this trip is that I'm gonna miss the whole season and a week in Breckenridge (I went last year. Man it was awesome).
