What's the best model of Commodore 64 to get?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I know there are different models, like the C and the SX-64 looks really cool. I'm not too sure if the Commodore 128 would be worth it, as I don't know if there are games that take advantage of the 128 mode.

I'm also not sure where to buy one. There's a guy on Youtube that I subscribe to that says he got his for $8 at a the Goodwill! 4jay's does sell them for cheap, but I got burned from them earlier this year after ordering a NES with new 72 pin that didn't work too well.

The only C128 games I'm aware of are some of the Infocom adventure games (A Mind Forever Voyaging, Bureaucracy, Beyond Zork), some budget games by Mastertronic (Kikstart, The Last V8), a handful of other games of minor interest by various publishers, and Elite. Most of them have decent C64 versions, and there seem to be no noteworthy C128 exclusives, so there's really no good reason to go with the C128.

I had a C= 128 when I was young - I never used 128 mode at all tbh - though I do think the keyboard is WAY better than the original breadbin, not sure but did the 'redesigned' (128 looking) C= 64 still have those horrible tall keys? My memory seems to think it did

I like the C128 version of Kickstart 2 but wouldn't exactly go buy a whole machine to play it. There's a C128 exclusive version of Rocky Horror Show too, though it's not much cop (like the original).

The C128 also has more jailbars in it's S-Video signal. At least the 128D does anyway. As for the dual output thing, the CGA style connector is only used for 80 column mode (mainly CP/M) so you don't really need to worry about it. All games (including the C128 games) use 40 column.

Nobodies mentioned the fact that Commodore changed SID chips in the C64c? I like the sound of the originals SID best.

all i remember that as vaguely different/extra, was messing around with the 'SPRDEF' mode in 128 mode

I wonder what it was actually capable of, did it have any extra capabilities (i.e. more colours etc.) or was it simply 'more RAM and maybe a slightly higher clockspeed' ?

Didn't they change the SID chips in the C128 as well? I certainly don't want any model where they've messed with that!

Yeah I believe so, though it's not as bad as people make out. Watch out for early bredbin models too as some don't have S-Video.
