Long term project idea (or not?)

I've been toying with the idea of a long-term candy project. My idea is to purchase a parted out candy shell and reassemble it piece by piece, gathering parts from wherever they pop up. Granted candies aren't that common on the East Coast, but it's an out-the-box idea that could be fun (for me, at least). I'

Any ideas? Suggestions?? Anyone working on their own long-term project that could share info?

Go for an Astro City or parts will be hard to find.

seems kind of pointless to me. most cabs that are parted out are done so because the shells are a wreck. and a good monitor will cost you almost as much as a cabinet. if you could find a whole but neglected cab for cheap to restore, that would make more sense.

brokenhalo: I've been keeping my eye out, as well as trolling different classifieds & forums. Trust me, if I a chance to grab up a candy that needed work to be playable I would. Most of the candies that do pop up tend to be West Coasters. The last cab I found (locally) was a Xiong Ba in DC (no thanks). Other HUO/private seller candies don't do shipping or are too far to make a truck run feasible. I haven't given up on locating a candy cab, I just like trying out different options or the road less travelled:) I've also found that opportunities come from the unlikeliest sources.

It'll end up costing you twice as much in the end, think about the shipping cost for each of those parts... So what would you rather have, 2 good complete cabs that you can use right away, or 1 cab that you can use 2-5 years from now?

The only advantage in doing this is if you score a monitor first - knowing which cab your fitting it too etc.etc. and then you can wait out to find a cab with a crappy screen or or no screen at all that will have reduced the cost of the shell.

However, seeing as how a good chunk of the worth of any cab is the monitor I'm not sure how successful you'll find it in terms of lowering cost overall... And if you end up trying to match a tube to a chassis to a cab and any of the 3 are incompatible it could prove to be a mistake...

This all being said if you score some cheap parts - especially monitors - you may be able to fund a cab that way, but that is a bit like saying if you go to work you'll get cash...

If I had to choose, I'd rather have something to use ASAP, but shipping a cab from Cali/Utah to MD will be about as expensive as the cab itself. I've got a bunch of parts (CPOs, harnesses, PCBs et. al) laying about, and it's just something I've been pondering. It might be simpler to just dump my collection and supergun and start fresh, I just wanted input on the idea.

Yeah; didn't mean to come across too negative - but I'd definitely say just sort out a display in that case. Unless someone decides to start a business in this area, crts are unlikely to get more common or cheaper.

Already have/make a decent joystick (?) and you'll be making the most out of your current parts. You can then have a nice supergun setup to enjoy these while waiting on a cab.

Whilst it's not the same thing for 15khz/standard res setup, a viable alternative could be a custom viewlix/lindenburgh type cabinet if you're handy with tools? ... You'll still get a sit down and play experience - depends what games your into - if you'd like sf4/kof13 or think about hooking up a console to the cab this could be a definite route to consider. If not I'd stick to the supergun + good crt display route in the meantime.

I already have a supergun and a growing collection of PCBs (since 2003, hence the selection of bits and pieces). Luck kicked in my door last fall when my Dad upgraded to HD, and I wound up with a wonderful 50" TV. Currently my supergun is down for a rebuild, to be finished after another one I was commissioned to build for someone:)

I have been exploring the custom Vewlix route, still am. A Kraylix would fit the bill, and be versitile. Not 15khz material, but it is a alternative... I had hoped to have a real-deal cab, but it might be better just to explore other options. Ideas don't always pan out, but it is good to hear opinions on them.

Hang on and get something complete. Shipping on large parts will quickly add up. Consider getting in touch with one of the numerous professional sellers, or organising a group buy
