I'll go so far as to say that the RE games are as close to being scary as I've seen in a game. They'll scare some people but not others.

They did when I was younger but the only one now is remake... I wouldn't say remake scares me but still has some tension.

Silent Hill 2 was actually difficult for me to play at home alone. Having said that I'd still rather play resident evil.

Most of my scares were from playing one the 1st time... everyone remembers the dog busting through the window. But alot of that was from the static camera angles.

Forgot about the SH series...I guess RE and SH are like Beverly Hills Cop versus Die Hard, or something (48 Hours and Naked Gun get put off to the side for now). RE has the cheese + comic relief going for it.

I've only played SH4 - pretty moody game and felt "grown-up" in some ways, but I don't find myself as drawn to a replay. So, ultimately, the idea of a scare factor doesn't really matter all that much to me in terms of what makes or breaks these games.

Or Day of the Dead vs Jacob's Ladder. ^_~

Although, SH1-4 actually take themselves a lot less seriously than their contemporary REs did. I'd say "despite" the more adult subject matter and tone but it's more likely because of it. When you're a grown man who's made a lot of mistakes it's okay to shout "How can you just sit there and eat pizza?!"

Okay, started up Chris' campaign. I don't know what RE is, but I think it is not supposed to be a game where you rush the enemies to do melee attacks. I also got an insta- game over trying to save my partner from the Super El Gigante. Not sure what that red tag over my partner's head is supposed to mean if I don't need to save 'im. Man, it's over already?

Awkward camera angles are still bothering me - in Leon's mission, a doorway obstructed my view of the laser coming in from the left, but I still made the shot. In this game, a "bioterrorist" (they all remind me of Sasha the sniper from Behind Enemy Lines) knifed me through a wall. Probably thinks he's playing Battlefield: BC2.

Sherry :3, mysterious gypsy woman that nobody sees :?
Jake has a nice intro actually, one of the better ones I've seen in the series. Doesn't make up for the other silliness but still, it's not all bad from here.

Edit: Getting the hang of Sherry's melee. Waded right into it. Who keeps their giant rook statue in a chest...in the hallway? Sherry's fatalities look...well, somewhere between girly and badass. I wouldn't want her mad with me. Still, I hope I don't have to play this way for the rest of the demo. It does keep those dragon things from coming, though.
Edit 2: Done.

Resident Evil always were goofy B-movies in videogame form. They had some scary points for sure (mostly the Iron Maidens in 4 for me), but when I see fans speak about how scary and immersive they used to be I can't help but scratch my head.

Considering what they did with RE5 (not giving a Gold DLC), we will probably get fucked again.

I noticed today that there is a $80 (or was it $90?) preorder for the game that included a bunch of Archives content - HD versions of RE4 and Code Veronica - and also an exclusive mercenaries map. Now it's (essentially) too late to preorder, but what the game companies are doing here is humiliating, preying on our best instincts instead of just providing a good game. I think "boy, I better start scrounging up my money before I lose the chance to play this map on a boat FOREVER," and a few moments after I regain my sanity - why exactly do I need to pay a 400% markup over what I expect to pay if I just wait? The HD versions can be bought elsewhere, and regardless of the exclusivity of the boat map, it's trying to lure us with stuff that doesn't matter in a game that definitely hasn't made its case. Anyway, I suppose I will get the game eventually - but I'm waiting on the PC version (and probably also on at least a price drop). Probably will be possible to buy a code down the line from some poor preorderer, anyway. It will be interesting to see if they stick to the preorder map being an exclusive. At the very least they've got me interested in the idea of the HD versions of the games (trophies, heh).

I bought a collector's edition of RE4 (the red tin from GameStop) back in the day, because I knew it was going to be a good enough game. How good I didn't realize. I certainly don't have that assuredness now. And that was back after the RE series had seen plenty of fairly high-profile missteps, too.

Edit: In Chris' campaign, I kept getting knocked forward by the APC when I was fighting stuff ahead. No damage that I noticed, but definitely a cause for "wtf."

It makes me happy to see that even mainstream media like Gamespot are being properly critical of RE6. Maybe this is the kind of "fuck you" we need to get Capcom out of the shit spiral they forced themselves into. Between the death of Mega Man, the bastardization of Resident Evil and the GOW-ing of Lost Planet, the company's future is looking bleak.

Destructoid gave it a 3.0.

This makes me laugh. I most certainly won't be buying this game.

Doesn't even have Matrix Wesker in it :(

The RE series has some great atmosphere. Some of the environments are awesome to behold in their meticulous detail. They really feel like abandoned places. They can definitely get tense too. I don't know about 'scary'. If that's just a catch-all term for tension, jump-frights and creepy monsters - sure, I guess so.

They also give GTA and COD fantastic reviews.... this game is no where near that bad. It's like sonic games now, no matter what they do it's going to get ragged on. I don't think folks have really played a 1 to 3 out of 10 game before.

0.6, eh? Brings a tear to my eye, even if it's just people who haven't played the game venting. I really, really want to see Capcom acknowledge the hate. Specifically the hate from western gamers who they thought they were courting. As for Revelations, i only played the demo, but I found the shooting to be awkward. Still, at least that game had atmosphere.

Metacritic has invalidated some of the troll-scores, RE6 now has a respectable 2.2 user score on PS3 and 2.7 on 360.

That's how I can tell it's a witch hunt. I totally get if you don't like the game, but I don't think folks really realize what a 1 to 3 ranked game is.

1 is the worst on the planet and 10 being prefect heaven. I have played some HORRIBLE games. Kids today are morons....

No spoilers -

Just finished playing Leon's first chapter - there is a ton of stuff I really enjoyed in there, and just as much stuff I didn't. It's difficult to play without thinking "why Capcom, why???". When the game eventually settles down and lets you play at your own pace it's great, but there are so many cut-scenes and scripted events. However, I'm hopeful. Popping zombies heads feel great and I've been impressed with the enemy designs so far - seems much more RE than 5 ever did.

The prelude is just about as bad as it gets, I'll never play it again - not that I did much playing.

I've also turned the camera speed down to 0 to avoid motion sickness - that's a first.

Bought the game today - regardless of what reviewers and RE-fanboys think. I really liked RE5, and if this can deliver the same kind of thrills... I'm in.

I was always more inclined towards the action-orientated RE entries anyway.
