If you've never played the game you can hear a little of the first boss's voice in this video, starting around 4 minutes in. It's the sort of creepy/echoing distortion you'd expect to hear when an undead/possessed thing is talking onscreen.

I've been recommended Audacity.

I'll tinker with it and see what I can do.I'd probably recommend grabbing reaper (www.reaper.fm) and trying to find a free VST plugin (which you can probably google search for) that does the filter effect you want. From the sounds of it you might need multiple effects. One to pitch shift the track and a second to add an echo or reverb.

Just wanted to mention that I acquired the korean version of the game and the translation works on that version as well. So just so you can add that "option" to people who want to play the original shiki no shiro (say something like works in ex and the korean version with minor graphical hiccups).
Only thing about the korean version is that the character portraits are messed up, although the boss portraits seem to be just fine. All dialogue shows up fine and I haven't tried the voices yet.
