Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
Darius Gaiden feels like it's meant to be played with auto fire. Japanese arcade machines normally have auto fire circuits built in and record listings are usually done with autofire.
That being said, it obviously makes the game easier. But, you get major bragging rights if you can beat it without autofire.
I probably wouldn't have played the game if it didn't have auto fire, though. Games where you have to mash the fire button as fast as you can feel outdated to me.

Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
I actually found *your* arguments quite well presented, my apologies for not saying so specifically - the in-game firerate is fine and if you have more fun using that then whatever config you use for every other game in existence, that's fine by me. It's the whole autofire=cheating bullshit which this thread reeked of when I read through it that pissed me off, and also sounds very similar to another can of worms which I won't mention.MathU wrote:Would you care to refute any of the specific arguments I've given? As I've said and demonstrated very clearly in the videos given, you really don't need to mash like crazy to beat Darius Gaiden; the default firing rate is perfectly adequate for 99% of the situations the game throws at you. This isn't a game like Image Fight or some of the earlier Darius games where you need to slam on that fire button constantly to get anywhere at all in the game.BPzeBanshee wrote:Frankly I fail to see any real credibility in the arguments for not using autofire for this game specifically.
Darius Gaiden is a great game IMHO, regardless of whether or not you use autofire. Anyone that busts this game with autofire and make the lacklustre 'it's easy therefore it sucks' claim is quite welcome to GTFO too. I don't discriminate in my attitude towards stupid one-liners.

lol, searching over this thread, only one other poster actually made the claim that autofire was cheating. Way to throw a shitfit over nothing.

No, but we did hear it back in 2005 when the PS2 port came out.BPzeBanshee wrote:
When Mushihimesama got a 360 port announced one of the first things that got brought up was multiple autofire configs. I didn't see anyone slamming said persons down for 'cheating' or 'taking the easy route'.

Maybe I'm just bad but it took me several hours to 1cc the easiest route with autofire. Autofire may "break" the game, but that didn't ruin it for this particular player.

Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
While I'm happy that the autofire actually allows the possibility of a 1CC for me at this game, when I get to final bosses I do notice that they die awfully fast, which is a little disappointing given how cool some of their attacks are. Except for Great Thing, who was and remains one of the best shmup bosses of all time. OF ALL TIME.
Also, considering how long and convoluted* the cheat-codes are on the Saturn version, it definitely feels a little bit like cheating! Still though, sometimes it feels like the bosses in DG have a disproportionate amount of health - then again, this is usually a gripe I have with all the Darius games - boss fights are battles of attrition more than anything else!

It makes me wonder if Taito did that, or if that was something moronic that the monkeys at Acclaim put in. You know, while they were busy putting the wrong cover-art on their port.

They sure gain a crapload of extra health if the rank is high, taking like 50% more damage before they die.
Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
Exactly, "cheating" is a strong accusation, but some here use it seemingly without even understanding what the word means. Look here at the row that says "autofire accepted (no delay)".Erppo wrote:I believe the only issue here is people saying the autofire is cheating. This is dumb, since using it falls withing the generally accepted rules of the competitive scoring, which means it's not.
What you could say, however, is that we should change the rules. But right now the rule is there and people playing by it aren't cheating.
Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
Yea, that's definitely overkill for a code. Right up there with the NES Ikari Warriors stage select.EmperorIng wrote: *Saturn DG wins the award for most stupidly-long passwords ever conceived. L R < < HOLD B X Y X HOLD X R > > ^ HOLD Z HOLD < START

There should be a highlight of which scores were attained with which method, as DG takes a different approach wethever you are playing with default settings or using turbofire to put them on the same scoreboard.DMC wrote:What you could say, however, is that we should change the rules. Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
I wouldn't say autofire in Darius Gaiden is cheating, but it does completely ruin the game. I almost managed to 1CC it the first time I played with autofire, whereas I felt it was a nice challenge without. Moreover, it completely ruins the FEEL of the game. The austere bosses and the grand settings feel completely at odds with the beam of laser death crushing everything within seconds. It's a completely different game, and not a particularly good one.
Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
The best solution obviously for those who hate the insane autofire, is to decrease their rate to be about the same as default fire rate. So you can save yourself the RSI.

Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
Buttom mashing is not fun. Button mashing causes injuries. Autofire is widely accepted in Japan for competitive scoring. I see nothing wrong with using autofire in any game.

I hope you don't play fighting games!Pulsewidth wrote:I see nothing wrong with using autofire in any game.
On topic, I think the best solution would be making separate scoreboards for autofire and non-autofire scores, since using it in this particular game significantly changes the way it's played. Autofire in games that have it as a built-in mechanic or where it doesn't really affect anything other than not having to mash is perfectly fine though.
Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
Car crashes cause injuries.
I'm sure Autofire is widely accepted for modern games. Try to play Gun Frontier with autofire and tell me you see nothing wrong with it.

Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
i think the best solution is to just ban external autofire

Re: Darius Gaiden dilema
The other day I played Chelnov on Saturn (leaked port) with a joypad. The game's without internal autofire (or even configurable button layout) from what I know and this being the case, the magic was gone. I just refuse to play Chelnov without autofire, just like I'd refuse to play Baraduke WITH it. Making any universal rules about it wouldn't work for me.
