Wreck-It Ralph

Post by DJ Incompetent »

Disney apparently made an animated film about videogames. It is coming out in November.

trailer

It has cameos from all the things.

I don't know if it's worth breaking my current streak of theater avoidance, but I do have to admit that I'm curious about it: if nothing else, it's one of the few video game movies that wisely doesn't constrain itself to the framework of a particular game or series, and also has at least gone to the trouble of getting a bunch of recognizable licenses to mix in with the non-specific winks and references, instead of depending completely on the latter. Will be keeping an eye on it...

Although the trailer didn't seem to go anywhere, the idea seems pretty sound. Tons of shout outs to anyone who has ever been a video game fan (built in market) and humor that writes itself. My biggest question is the central plot--something not entirely developed in the trailer.

Too many cameos. I think this will just end up being a glorified huge advertisement, with references substituted for actual comedy. So far Disney hasn't made a single quality CG movie without Pixar and this should be no exception.

^^^ Really? I thought that Meet The Robinsons and Bolt were pretty good. (unless them having received Pixar support counts against them making the movie)

Is the zombie from House of the Dead?

I don't care for most Western blockbuster CG animation in general, but Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt all stuck out as being unremarkable and soulless in ways that Pixar has never been. They stink of stale corporatism, movies obviously made with merchandising and promotions as priority one.

And I think it's just a generic zombie.

Pretty sure I'm going to end up seeing it when it comes out (I had a pretty good streak of staying away from the theaters until I started dating my GF, who is a big movie fan.) Im thinking it should be OK as long as they don't mess it up. It seems like video game movies tend to go in one of two ways: a) Gratuitous fanservice; or b) trying too hard to be funny without properly understanding the source material. And I think it should be pretty clear by now that trying to turn a throwaway video game plot into a feature length movie is usually asking for trouble.

As for CG Disney movies, I actually thought Tangled was pretty good. not quite Pixar level, but good enough to stand on its own. Haven't seen a lot of the others.

Maybe they researched the Street Fighter live action movie (the one with Van Damme and Minogue) as I'm pretty sure he was portrayed as evil in that one.

I think the least amount of story in the film, the better it will be.
Maybe they should have done more research, and maybe the film will do well.

My guess is he stands out more than "generic claw guy" or "generic dictator guy" or "generic boxer guy" or "generic tall eye patch guy."

Not to mention the hero of the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph CG film will have his own bona-fide arcade game release, Fix-It Felix, Jr, to be released nationwide this coming fall of 2012 (according to USA Today dated 6/05/2012). FiF Jr. and WiR go back to the early classic 1980s arcade game release, hence his old-school 8-bit arcade glory days as portrayed in the film and kickin' it old school with the arcade game character cameos like Q*Bert, Coily, Ugg, Sam, Wrong Way, etc.

You might recall Q*Bert had his own Saturday morning cartoon show back in 1984. Yeah, it was a short lived nationally syndicated arcade game cartoon series just for one season at best.

Well his stage is USSR and he gets dancing with Gorbachev, so they probably just went "commie? Bad guy then".

If you're going to do a self-aware video game film, then you really can't drop the ball like that. Especially when he has Bowser, Dr. Robotnik and M. Bison sat around him - all far more correct for an "I'm a bad guy" speech.

I think it's meant to be generic too, but the axes def mean it's a HotD styled zombie.

I'm not hipst enough to complain about a movie idea this cool, so I'm gonna go see it and enjoy myself. Also, Sarah Silverman is hilarious in everything she has ever done.

I'm hoping it will turn out good. I just saw the latest trailer and I was surprised by the amount of cameos. I especially liked the part where one of the characters was talking Q*Bert speak with Q*Bert. I'm surprised no one mentioned the Gradius sound effect at the end of the trailer. It was nice hearing a reference to a shmup in the trailer.

Funnily enough, I'd probably have children by now if I was sure they'd play video games with me. Parents can't just make their children like or dislike things, though.

and this is why I love the look if this film. My 8-year old daughter and 3-year old son are super excited about a cartoon with Daddy's games in.

I really don't get who they're trying to appeal to. Older gamers that know these characters don't watch kiddy Disney movies (unless it's with their kids) and kids don't know the characters, or really anything about older 2D games.

I hope that Zangief being evil in the movie is just to parody the SF movie and cartoon and that it's used as a plot twist where Ralph finds out he's actually a good guy in the games.

If it's "Fix It Felix Jr.", what happened to Fix It Felix Sr.? Or is that just a completely random pseudo-reference to Donkey Kong Jr.?
