Best Flash Shmups

Hi guys. New to this forum, but not new to shmups, having grown up with them through the 80's and 90's. I've recently been reminiscing about some of those great games I used to play and have got the urge to get involved with them again. I decided to put together a website on which I want to have the best browser shmups available. I will post the link if anyone wants me to, but I don't want to appear that I've only joined this forum to spam it!. So far I've got a small handful of them, such as SpaceGate, RetroShoot, TagAttack and CronusX, all of which, incidentally, have been created by good friends of mine in the dev community (I'm a game developer too). They are great games, when you consider the limitations of Flash as a platform. You really have to bend the rules to get Flash to do things like particle effects, so making a decent bullet hell game in Flash is a real achievement. I've attempted to make one myself but the results were not that great to be honest.

So, anyway - hello to you all, and if anyone has played any Flash shmups which they thought were of good quality, please let me know, as I'd like to add them to my site.

Welcome Andromedus. There have been a few threads asking about good flash shmups, so the forum search function should be your best friend. Here is one thread in particular that lists a bunch, the first two being my most favorite.

Thanks for the link Dave - I already found most of those through various searches but there are a couple on there I haven't played yet. It's a shame that the first one on that list, Arcanacra Black Label, doesn't seem to exist anymore. From the youtube videos I've seen ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NllnXpWI ... re=related ) it looks really nice, but unfortunately the only surviving version of it I managed to find didn't work. If anyone knows of a working version anywhere I would LOVE to get my hands on that one!

Keim (author of Arcanacra) moved his website, and I'm pretty sure I have it bookmarked on another machine at home. Will look for it and post here if I find it this weekend.

Thanks - that's the only link I could find too, but unfortunately the game doesn't appear to be working. Running it through the debug version of flash, it looks like the game is trying to connect to his website which no longer exists (for the highscores, maybe?), and that seems to be breaking the game. I also found a page where the author, Keim, posted a link to the source code, but that link is broken too. If anyone knows him or knows of any way of contacting him, please let me know, as I'd be happy to take a look at the code and see if I can get it working again.

Ah, sorry. I just clicked the top link, saw the black rectangle, and assumed it was working fine. It'd be nice to see it up again.

Seems the SWF is broken because it's trying to load several config files from Keim's old site. So either the SWF has to be recompiled with new URLs or maybe it would run using a local proxy.

That's good new Dave - thanks for bringing it to his attention. I hope he makes this game available again, I can't wait to play it.
