What's wrong with the sound of a quarter or a good old fashioned ten pence piece?

Blasphemer! 100 yen coins have a special *click-cla-clank-cla-Chink!* that you just can't get with any other form of currency.

Yeah, when I came back from Japan to the USA, I did bring back a few Japanese coins including a 100 yen coin as a cool momento. Unfortunately, the coin mechanism on my Egret II has been set up to accept those classic American quarters as the serious choice to "coin-up" or credit a game. Is it easy to revert back to the proper 100 yen coinage with such a coin mechanism setup on them candy cabs? Of course, some arcade shmup PCBs such as the classic Cave Donpachi and DDP don't have such a Free Play option, so the next best thing to to properly coin 'em up. It's a given alrighty.

I'll have to agree with rancor about playing those cool ol' school arcade titles for a mere 50 yen at a local game center hangout. Can't beat that price any ol' day!

True story:

Was at a game center in March of 2000 and spotted a DDP up & running on an Astro City candy cab endowed with the usual bright neon pink colored motif for both joysticks and all push buttons. Was pleasantly surprised by all the different novel bright neon "Easter Egg" color schemes that the candy cabs used (compared to the usual drab color schemes shown on the bigger American Dynamo uprights used stateside). Looked to see how much a credit was and spotted a cardboard sign taped over the usual 100 yen sign that read "50 yen". Ah, this game center appropiately prices their classic arcade shmups at the more affordable 50 yen rate (the currency exchange rate of $1.00 USD = 118 yen back at that particular point in time). Proceeded to the nearest money changer machine and put in a single 100 yen and was given two 50 yen coins in the return coin slot. Made my way back to the DDP candy cab and sat down to properly try it out for the first time. Went through my paces the first time and was blown away by how solid DDP's gameplay was. Inserted the second 50 yen coin and played it again. Vowed to someday own such a DDP PCB to play at my leisure. Fast forward a few years down the road, snagged a DDP PCB to play/own.

There are also a few games that when set to Free Play will not go through the regular attract mode sequence (Guwange I'm looking at you!)

Definitely not ideal for preventing burn in on your precious CRT.

And of course if you're running a MAME setup on a cab and you don't have a spare button to assign for credits, you can always rig up a switch on your coin slot to trigger the credits instead.

Thanks for the handy tip there, shmuppyLove. I'll keep that in mind. Yeah, "screen-burn in" is not some to be taken lightly with those big 29" CRT-based arcade monitors indeed. Gotta dial down the contrast a bit when firing up a gaming console running on such an arcade monitor just to play it safe, y'know?

Yes, very, very simple.

Check out the wiki on AO ;)

I was left with a 500-yen coin which I had washed at a shrine during my last trip to Japan. My local arcades stopped using any form of coin mechanism here, so I kinda missed that sound when you feed the credit (or a 1-dolloar coin) into the machine. Even the local casinos started using the card system and the coin sounds were emulated. The feel isn't there anymore!
This is my signature. It's so unique, nobody else has it.

Yeah, it was pretty easy to install. I just took out the coin chute and installed a microswitch under the slot. The best part is if I ever decide I don't like it, it can be removed in a couple of minutes.
