choosing saturn shooters

Post by fullblownaidzz »

Over the next couple months i've got to limit my spending on shooters, but somehow my brother managed to get an extra japanese saturn and give it to me. Now in the next 2 or 3 months i can probably only spare about 100 bucks on games. I have a dreamcast too, but i have all the shooters i want on that. For reference, my favorite shooter is Mars Matrix, so i guess i like manic style shooters?

Anyways, what shooters would be good? I was thinking dodonpachi, cuz i hear that will last me a while. Is Strikers 1945 any good? How about Layer Section. I would like to get more than one game out of my 100 bucks, so battle garegga and all that are out of the question.

Thanks in advance.

Soukyugurentai, dodonpachi, batsugun.... the latter two are manic, souky is just as good though :)

If you only have $100, definitely get layer section since it goes for cheap. If I liked it more, I'd also recommend Darius Gaiden if I liked it more. Dodonpachi and the Strikers games you mentioned are great choices too (though I prefer the psx version of dodonpachi). Batsugun is my favorite shmup on the system, but it will probably be too expensive (as are most of my other favorites). Perhaps the Gradius and Salamander packs?

And yeah, sometimes Souky goes for cheap, that's a good one as well (though I hardly play it anymore...)

Layer Section I'd say is a must have. Not too expensive, and it's an excellent shooter. DoDonPachi, Soukyugurentai, and Strikers 1945 II are some pretty good choices as well.

Game Tengoku and the 3 Parodius games (well, 4 technically, since there are 2 of them on the Deluxe Pack) can be had for around 30 bucks or so apiece, if you look around for a bit. Not exactly manic, but if you want some humor then these games are usually pretty affordable. Most of the suggestions already on this thread aren't bad choices either.

would dodonpachi be worth the 40 or so dollars it goes on ebay? i might end up going with batsugun and dodonpachi, cuz that would end up being about 100 dollars total. Would this be a good choice or should i go with quantity over quality? also, are there any shooters like shikigami no shiro 2 on saturn?

DDP and Batsugun are both top tier games, so personally I would probably go for those two, but many of the other games mentioned are excellent.

Do you want quantity over quality? It's up to you. The US shooters are all quite cheap and good. JP shooters may be better but they also cost 3-4 times as much on average. Not sure what specifically from Shikigami you're looking for...

i think i like it so much for the music. That and the whole idea that the closer you are to getting killed the more points you get.

To get the most play time for your money, go with DDP, Souky, and Galactic Attack, trust me on this.

3 great games, and not a bad solution. ;) I'd definitely have Soukyugurentai in there somewhere.

Excellent choices-- you'll surely enjoy them a lot, though I myself have never been able to get into layer section.

maybe

Gradius Deluxe (two impossibly excellent games for around $30)
Souky is great (around $30)
Layer Section is genius (and cheap)

as far as Battle garegga goes, it is expensive, and it would likely eat up your budget, but consider the mileage one can get from it (and on top of that, if you don't like it, it will not be depreciating in value any time soon)
I have no sig whatsoever.

I hardly play Layer section, it's not a bad game though, and it's cheap price tag makes it a very attractive choice. Also just to add, the game is very pretty to look at.

Definatly make DDP and Souky your top priority purchase though, Many seem to regard souky as one of the best on saturn. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't souky have some similarities to Layer section?

a good game to start with is Layer Section and Dodonpachi because they are both reasonably cheap and quality games. After than, batsugun, strikers (or gunbird), and soukyu are good choices.

Well, the Lock-On laser system is similar, but that's just about it.
Souky has very good graphics.

I would stay away from Layer Section 2 by the way. Bad frame rate & slowdowns, combined with the poor graphics (Compared to the PS-1 version) hurt this game substantially.

Layer Section 1 is a more faithfully arcade port imo.

Oh yes, It's basically an unofficial sequel to the game. Personally, I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped, but it's definetly a quality game.

I enjoy Layer Section a whole lot more though, one of my definite favourites as a matter of fact. It's entirely arcade perfect too from what I can tell (except for some grahpical/audio tweaks), you'll have to play it in TATE mode though. Highly recommended.
