What's the best MVS 1-slot?

Post by Drachenherz »

What's the best MVS 1-slot mobo to use in a Blast City?

And how much would it set me back?

I don't know the answer, but I'm interested too.

As a Blast owner myself, I would *guess* that one of the horizontal loading designs would be better if you're planning to mount to the board, simply because of the size of MVS carts. They might stick out too far and hit the PSU if you went with the vertical loading design. Would be much easier to change games with a horizontal model, as well.

However, I don't know the actual differences between the various MVS motherboard models, so I can't say which if any is objectively better.

As for cost, they tend to run $100-$200USD, if Excellentcom's pricing is anything to go by. eBay has some for slightly less, in the sub-$100 range.

I've done some googling and found some useful information:

http://www.hardmvs.com/

http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/Beginners ... eo_Geo_MVS

Okay, looks like the ideal MVS 1-slot for me would be a horizontal one with a socketed bios, as I'd like to use the unibios.

I've seen some 1 slots (with soldered bios unfortunately) for 40 to 90 $ at hk legend...

http://www.hklegend.com.hk/?page_no=7&lang=0

Hmmm... Dunno, I'd really prefer a modell with the socketed bios...

The MV-1F series (1F, 1FS, 1FZ) are the best ones, if you want a horizontal slot and socketed BIOS.

If the Blast City does stereo, then you'll probably want the MV-1F since it's the only one that offers stereo output through a separate 4-pin connector on the PCB. None of the 1-slot boards will do stereo through the JAMMA harness (since they are designed to be JAMMA compatible).

If you don't need stereo, then any of those will do, since the other differences won't really matter if you're putting it into a cab. The MV-1FZ is very compact if space is an issue:

I got an MV-1FZ in my blast.

wish it had stereo, but i dont really care.

My MVS was my favourite arcade purchase so far. so many great games! cost me around ~$75 shipped. Crazy good deal if you ask me.

moh, that's an awesome deal. Nice find.

shmuppyLove, thanks for the info. Blasts are by default stereo compatible, but depending on the wiring version and which type of JAMMA harness you have they can be slightly annoying to hook up.

However, how many MVS games actually have stereo output? Just curious.

Thanks for the good advice, it seems like I should start hunting for a mvs MV-1F.. then. My jamma loom in the blast unfortunately hasn't got the red and white cinch-cables, so I don't have stereo from the get-go... So either version of the F will do for me. (don't want to shell out for a 001-loom and don't feel like building something on my own...)

Hmm, a swiss vendor has a mvs 1-slot for sale. It isn't specified what modell it is, but from the picture it looks like a mv-1fz...

The offer:
http://www.vsa-ag.ch/video/neo-geo-mvs/ ... -slot.html

Comparison:
http://www.hardmvs.com/html/MV-1FZ.htm

Now, it costs 90 swiss francs, thats around 90 us$ or about 70 €, which is on the pricier side. But... Shippping would be only 4 swiss francs, and no trouble/additional fees with customs...

Should I go for it?

I'd say go for it! I have the MV-1F, and I think it's definitely the best 1-slot.

Actually, all of them. Stereo is a standard feature of all NeoGeo hardware.

Oh, I get it-- the 1-slot boards, since they're made to be JAMMA compliant, just sum the channels to mono.

Lol, thanks then. I'll be sure to keep that in mind going forward.

I got an offer for an MV-1fzs mobo.

Google tells me, an MV-1fzs is almost the same as an MV-1fz, but there is no info on the fzs on hard-mvs. The mv-1fzs looks the same to me as the mv-1fz in pictures...

does anybody on here know the differences between those boards?

I mean those:

MV-1FZ:

MV-1FZS:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

And yes, those pics are supposed to depict the different models. They sure look the same on those two pics...

The info on hardMVS for the MV-1FS is completely wrong:

Image

I've checked a few other sources, and this pic is consistent with other MV-1FS pictures. Just by looking at the picture, you can tell the MV-1FS:

- has controller ports
- has PCB connectors for stereo and headphone
- has volume control for stereo and headphones

The table on hardMVS says the MV-1FS has none of these things, which is clearly wrong.

But back to your question: I believe the MV-1FZ and MV-1FZS are the same board -- on my MV-1F, one of the two boards (can't remember if it's the main board or the cartridge board) has a different model number on it. So I think some people are looking at the wrong model number and getting confused.

If it wasn't buried in a box under my bed I would get it out and take a pic ...

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, looks like the fzs is more or less the same as the fz.

I put in my order now, if everything goes down as it should, I hope to post soon in the "cool pcb you got" thread. :-)

Looks like I have to put the monitor in my Blast to yoko soon, uaaargh...

Eheheh yes, I see what you mean ... heavy yet not so heavy.

Ah well, when she gets older she can help you pivot the monitor back and forth
