PS3 Noob Questions

Post by shmuppyLove »

Ok so I'm the proud new owner of a 2nd-hand CECHA01 60GB PS3 (launch model) and here's where I will ask my noob questions about it.

So, backwards compatibility -- I would like to be able to play my PS2 games with my PS2 joystick. So far I have confirmed that the PS3 Dual Shock 3 works fine when I want to use a pad, but I have a custom-built joystick with a PCB from an original PS1 digital pad.

Can you use original PS1/PS2 controllers with PS2 games on the PS3? Or is there some limitation that only allows the use of PS3 controllers?

I tried the joystick with an HK EMS USB2 adapter, and the buttons were working (although mapped incorrectly), but the movement controls were not. But this was actually with R-Types from PSN, which I guess is emulating PS1.

I will probably end up getting an MC Cthulhu for the stick, is anyone using one and can confirm it works with all titles (PS1/PS2/PS3)?

Yes you can, though it's dependent on what converter you're using.

Ok, another question:

Hard drive upgrades

I've gotten my hands on a Western Digital 250GB drive and I'd like to pop it in. Does the PS3 backup feature back up all the content from the original drive? Or are they some restrictions on what can be backed up?

The system has some PSN games on it (that I didn't pay for lol) that I don't want to lose.

Yes it will backup everything, but any game, music, or video associated with another account besides your's will not be accessible until you have that person log into it.

Ok so I might possibly lose the downloaded PSN games is what you're saying ...

Is it possible to do the drive swap, and if I can't access those games on the new drive, put the old drive back in?

Another joystick question --

If I get a joystick that was designed for PS3 (Hori, Mad Catz, etc), will it work with B/C titles (PS2, PS1)?

I'm dying to fire up SFA3 on this setup ... haven't played the PS1 port for a long time because I couldn't find it, and I just came across it the other day :D

It should work, though I would confirm if the controller works on a PC as a plug-n-play device (requires no reconfiguration or program to properly work). Doing this you can compare inputs between a normal ps1/ps2 controller and ps3 arcade stick to see which button is configured to.

Just redownload the game from PSN if it's your game. Else just have the other person who owns the game to log into your ps3 and download it on your new hard drive. Make sure you copy your save files and game settings both on a seperate usb and backup hard drive.

Ok so I tried my TvC stick with the Mayflash Classic Controller adapter, and it basically works.

I was testing with SSFIV, and the layout is pretty janky. I was able to remap the inputs to something a bit more usable, but what would normally be L1 and R1 on a native stick (L and R on the TvC stick) don't seem to provide any input whatsoever.

And it didn't really work at all with R-Types.

I think I'm going to end up just grabbing an MC Cthulhu ...

Edit: MC Cthulhu ordered 8)
