Help looking for an obscure gambling movie

Not sure if anyone can name this, my Dad's looking for a gambling movie and has some very loose details and we're trying to pin down the film. I've Googled everything with no luck.

This is what we have:

- Either an 80's movie or thereabouts
- Serious (not a comedy)
- Fairly low budget
- No leading female actresses
- Gambling is the main theme
- Main character is a drifter and a card player (could be Poker?)
- He drives a BMW
- He gets drawn into a contest with a rich gay couple held in their home (one is a fat guy who has won the lottery, and his lover is a small Asian guy).
- Main character runs out of money during the game
- We think it may be from a book or short story

If this rings a bell with any of you movie buffs we'd be much obliged.

Thanks Louis, that's not it unfortunately, I checked that one through google already. It being an 80's movie is not 100%, it could possibly be early nineties or mid/late seventies.
