Outrun Online Arcade, September 22nd, 2012

Post by Ghegs »

Many of us still have OOA, so let's celebrate that. I'm putting together an online event over at Rolling Start, and I want to see as many people there as possible.

Where: XBLA
What: Outrun Online Arcade
When: September 8th, this coming Saturday, at 4 PM CST. Use this handy online meeting calendar to check what that is in your timezone. And get that Live Gold ready to go. I only put in an hour for the "meeting", but we can do it as long as we want to.

Tell your friends! I'll be recording my 360 footage and putting it up on Youtube afterwards, let's show Sega we still love Outrun.

I have this installed and I'm glad I do - however, it seems the game is gone from XboXLive in Europe :( (to buy)

Yes, the game can no longer be purchased because Sega lost the Ferrari license. However, if you bought it before, you can still access and play it, even multiplayer, just like nothing had happened.

Pretty sure I bought this on the day it was announced it would be discontinued. I'll try to remember to hop online.

Wish I had bought it. I've been playing the old Xbox version on the 360. Coast to Coast has the original tracks on it as well. Shame I can't take part.

I've got it, but I thought the multiplayer was unplayably laggy. It was also stupid how you just clipped through other cars.

Really wasn't a very good port at all. The HUD elements were poorly upscaled to HD, and we never saw the SP courses, not even as DLC. It's also missing all the extra music and other unlockables from Coast 2 Coast. Sumo Digital are overall untalented hacks.

I've played plenty of multiplayer and never experienced any lag. Also, the clipping cars is a setting, you can either set it so the cars can crash into each other, or that they pass through. The latter can useful if you want to do something more akin to simultaneous time attack, a la Trackmania.

OOA isn't a port. It takes some stuff from Outrun 2 SP and some from Coast 2 Coast, it's more of a remix. What it does take from Outrun 2 SP is, in fact, the courses; it's the original Outrun 2 courses that are missing. And why are they missing? The game was released in early 2009, when XBLA's size limitation was still a mere 350 MB. There simply wasn't enough room to throw in everything. The game probably didn't sell enough to warrant adding them in later via DLC.

I might be able to get in on this. Maybe I should practice a little bit first.

Does this game support microphones? It might be funny to hear commentary.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

I'll try to join in. Wasn't online with my 360 for years, but I should have a 48 hours gold code somewhere. My XBLA nick is SAMO IN AGONY. *Love* OutRun2.

So far wide of the mark. It's kind of a bare bones port granted, but if you're gonna slag something then getting the basics right would be a good idea.

I'm kind of divided, the C2C on original Xbox (chipped) looks beautiful but quite pixlated, it's cleaner on 360 but not seems to loose something. Anyway I'm game for this.

You can, and we could create a party, but it's not technically needed. I'll be hosting a game so just look for multiplayer games when the event starts, there aren't any lobbies you could choose from or anything. The games are max. six player affairs so if everybody who has expressed interest does end up coming, we'll probably have two groups of people playing.

My XBL handle is Ghegs, unsurprisingly.

Really good game. I'm not sure if it's slightly embarrassing or totally awesome that my son, who was 9 at the time, is at the top of my friends' leaderboard and has been since the week it came out.

Well, that was several kinds of retarded and awesome. We should do this more often. Shmups Forum multiplayer game of the week?

Big thanks to everybody who joined in, it was a blast. I think there was another group of people also playing, it's a shame the game doesn't have a better lobby system. We'll be sure to do this again.

I'll be putting the 2-hour video up soon.

It's up.

So that's why the later races were so ridiculous, you had turned catch-up on. Is it the same thing as the rubber banding in Daytona USA where your top speed is increased in lower places?

There were a couple times when your connection dropped in the middle of a race, ending it for everyone, unfortunately.

If we did another one of these for Sega Rally Revo/Online Arcade, it would give me a good excuse to buy either of them.

I'd even be down for Daytona USA XBLA, despite that I already own the game three times over.

It was a lot of fun and after se turned catch-up on it went batshit crazy. At one point I was slipstreaming the japanese guy and slightly bumped his rear and it made me warp to 373km/h 8)

Yeah, turning catch-up on certainly made things...interesting and it stretched the game's engine to the breaking point when things like this happened.

There were a few connection problems but overall it wasn't too bad. I was more confused how the party kept disbanding near the beginning of the video, yet nobody dropped out from the game.

Very possibly. Stay tuned to Rolling Start, though they'll probably be advertised here as well.

I don't actually have Daytona USA myself, at least not yet, but many people have expressed interest in having get-together for the game.

This game looks pretty fun! Unfortunately, as has been noted, this particular version is not an option. I'd be OK getting one of the offline-only predecessors though. How do OutRun 2 and 2006: Coast to Coast stack up against Online Arcade?

Outrun C2C supports local network play; it may be possible to play it multiplayer via hamachi or something even though the official server for the PC version is down. In addition to the standard races, C2C comes with a playable port of Outrun 2SP (both O2 and the O2SP levels). It's also got a sort of tournament mode with a variety of challenges to complete, unlockable tracks, upgraded cars, reversed courses (you can unlock the 15 stage continuous routes in reverse too).

As far as I know (I've only played it once at a friend's), Outrun Online Arcade only has the Outrun 2SP course. It's missing all the Outrun 2 courses as well as mirrored/reversed courses and the Outrun class of cars (boosted stats, racing stripes, etc). Outrun 2006 C2C is still the best version in my opinion, OOA's only draw is the convenient online multiplayer.
