Holiday timez... need tips on where to go in Ireland and Sco

If you want to see some great countryside go to the isle of skye. Also take the West highland railway to Mallaig (I think one is not far from the other) from Fort William. Its the journey Harry Potter takes in the chambre of Secrets.

They do daily runs in the week and you get to be pulled by a real steam engine.

Don't come to Dublin! The beer is too expensive and the only arcade in town sucks.

Head out to somewhere fun, like Galway or Clare. Doolin or Lahinch are good spots. Cliffs of Moher etc. you'll get a good scoop there, chippy tea and 5 minutes of sunshine if you're lucky!

Too late, we'll spend the first four days in Dublin... but we're artfags and it has lots of great museums, so that's ok.

If you stray north of the border I can highly recommend The Antrim Coast Road

Start at Larne and work your way round to Portrush. I'm not sure as to the status of the Arcades in Portrush now but I have many, many happy childhood memories of that road. The high points for me were the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and the Giant's Causeway.

I'm not a fan of Dublin at all. Cork is a much more interesting city, bigger than Dublin and with less tourists. and the county is really varied and cool. A few good record stores. The university grounds are nice too. It's a big cliche, but Blarney castle makes for a good day out. Galway is cool too.

IRELAND

Go up north and check out 'Giant's Causeway', a rock formation that's straight out of Mars Matrix or something. Belfast is near and I think it's more interesting than Dublin, with the huge paramilitary graffitis declaring "freedom fighter" zones and whatever. Just remember to check your rental car's bottom for bombs in the morning

Glendalough is a picturesque valley south of Dublin with old celtic churches, cemetaries and beautiful lakes and stuff. Rent a car and go there.


SCOTLAND

-Isle of Skye was already mentioned, +1. It's magnificient, you can run in the hills without seeing any signs of humans, not a single piece of garbage, just grass and sheep and dramatic mountains (check out especially Quiraing). Go stay at Dun Flodigarry hostel.

-Just before Skye there's the castle Eilean Donan, known best from the movie Highlander. Really cool place to visit.

-For an even more interesting castle, try Doune castle, near Stirling. What makes this castle stand out from the rest is that it was used as the filming location for the legendary scenes in Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail - AND it's the goddamn Winterfell from Game of Thrones also!

-Loch Ness is quite boring in the end.. it's huge, but the coast is not very nice, roads and all. Urquhart castle is impressive though and there are some really nice spots for a picnic just south of Ness

-Stirling itself has a really impressive tower, the William Wallace Monument. It's like straight out of some Lord of the Rings movie.

-Dundee is quite a lively town, I liked it more than Inverness (everybody looked like they were drug fiends) or Edinburgh.


Places I know would rock but haven't been to:

-Fingal's Cave on Staffa isle - partly underwater cave with hexagonal lava columns
-Skara Brae - a stone settlement on the Orkney islands up north that's older than the pyramids and in excellent condition. and yeah, if you ever played the Ultima games it's even more interesting

If you're into good coffee and espresso, I'd highly recommend checking out The Art of Coffee. My girlfriend and I are coffee geeks and ended up spending much of our time there once we grew a bit tired of exploring Dublin.

Derry in the North is a shithole, but there's plenty of history and things to look at.
There is absolutely nothing videogame related, the arcades (snooker halls) have closed down.
