x68000 display size question

Post by blackoak »

Might be better to go straight to the source at nfggames, but thought I'd check here first since I know some users here own an x68000. Just got a x68000 PRO, works fine, but when I hook it up to my large samsung LCD (which should be able to handle 640x480 without a problem, as it works with the xrgb3 without troubles), I get a picture, but its very zoomed in. Its like I'm only seeing the upper left quadrant of the screen. Any idea what this could be? I'm just running directly into the TV's rear rgb out, no intermediate processing. Obviously I'm missing or misunderstanding something... thanks for any help.

can you maybe force the monitor to "auto-adjust"

Most X68000 games are far lower res than 640 x 480, and I have yet to find an LCD scalar that properly uses that signal. I've pretty much had to stick with CRTs.

The only medium or high-res software is the command line or SX-Window.

One user has reported that his LCD TV blew the video sub-PCB in his X68000, but I suspect he was using a faulty VGA converter.

X68000 does not run at 640x480. The most common resolutions it runs at are: 256x256, 512x512, 768x512

Other resolutions it can run at (but doesn't frequently do) are: 384x256, 512x256, 768x256, 256x512, 384x512, 1024x1024

Human68k runs at 768x512, most games are either 256x256 or 512x512. Most stuff runs at 31kHz, but some only runs at 15kHz. I think I'm yet to find something running at 24kHz, but it's definitely allowed by the hardware.

Thanks, that explains things. For some reason I had always thought 31k equated with 640x480... a misconception now corrected. ;) So, it seems there's no real way to get something like the x68k to play on a modern LCD/hdtv then? Reading threads, I got the impression there was. I do have an xm29 to play this on, I was just looking forward to using the nicer speakers on my primary console setup.

@antron, my lcd hdtv (actually an LG, not samsung) doesn't appear to have an auto-adjust. Do HDTVs tend to have less available resolutions than your average computer-use LCD?

I had a Samsung that only had one button. If I held it in it would try and scale the image to fit the screen.
