Favorite Neo shmups
Don't know if this has been done or not, couldn't find it by searching.
Since the poll doesn't have that many options, I'll list them right here:
Aero Fighters 2
Aero Fighters 3
Alpha Mission 2
Andro Dunos
Blazing Star
Captain Tomaday
Ghost Pilots
Ironclad (Neo CD only)
Last Resort
Prehistoric Isle 2
Pulstar
Strikers 1945+
Twinkle Star Sprites
Viewpoint
Zed Blade
I'm really interested in what people think of Tomaday and Last Resort. The only one I've played is Strikers 1945+, and while I like it, I really would have rather liked an all new Strikers instead of some port. Sure can't beat pink bullets tho.

All of these are great. Out of the above listed, I play Blazing Star, Aero Fighters 2, Pulstar, and Viewpoint the most. LOVE Blazing Star, and hope it gets an official port some day.

I've got to say, the last resort orb is way more fun than the r-type orb.. maybe it's just me. not a big fan of r type.
strikers 1945 plus has got to be high on the list because psikyo rocks and the graphics are so much prettier than the original games, not to mention the upscaled difficulty level

Re: Favorite Neo shmups
Aero Fighters 2
Aero Fighters 3 -- A very fun series. Good for a mindless blast.
Alpha Mission 2 -- Wonderful music, but annoying and gets tedious.
Captain Tomaday -- Cute, but feels unfair. Not compelling for me.
Ghost Pilots -- Brainless and gets boring fast.
Last Resort -- Awesome and cruel. Perhaps my favourite shmup on the Neo.
Pulstar -- Very beautiful, but merciless.
Viewpoint -- ditto. Hit detection is a little off, I think.
Zed Blade -- Call me crazy, but I'm in love with this one. The music absolutely kicks a$$.

My favourites are Last Resort, Pulstar, and Viewpoint. Here's my comments on those I've played:
Aero Fighters 2 -- Fun but very basic. I prefer the vertical orientation in the original and in Limited, but the ridiculous between-level dialogue almost makes up for it.
Aero Fighters 3 -- I like this one better. Not as long, which is good, with a fun second loop and some wacky extras.
Alpha Mission 2 -- Interesting weapon system, but very long and very slow. Puts me to sleep.
Andro Dunos -- Cute and colourful, a decent play but nothing really memorable.
Blazing Star -- Awesome graphics, nice sound, good ship selection, and a cool vibe. Too bad the game is so unbalanced in the later stages. Oh well, grab a friend and credit-feed to the end!
Ghost Pilots -- Exceedingly drab and basic, also quite long and slumber-inducing.
Last Resort -- Doesn't get enough credit! Pulstar is the most obvious homage to R-Type, but this takes something of the atmosphere of R-Type II and grafts on to it its own very unique play-style. Really good fun, either alone or with a friend, with fine artwork and some excellent tunes. Fabulous!
Prehistoric Isle 2 -- Like Blazing Star, but not as crazy, or as fun. Decent, but the original Preshistoric Isle has more personality.
Pulstar -- The ultimate homage to R-Type, it's amazing as a fan of R-Type to play through the game and see how little bits of R-Type are subtly reimagined. It actually plays very differently -- and less interestingly, since your pod can only be detonated, and not detached or moved around in any way -- but it's excellent in its way and a real classic.
Strikers 1945 Plus -- A very different experience than Strikers I/II, I prefer the latter games.
Twinkle Star Sprites -- A bit too cute, and I can't get into it as much as some, but it scores big for originality and playability.
Viewpoint -- What Pulstar is to R-Type, Viewpoint is to Zaxxon, although the superficial dejavu soon gives way to the realization that -- as with Pulstar -- this is a very different game than its inspiration. It's also excellent -- rock hard though
-- and features exceptional graphics and a great soundtrack.
Zed Blade -- This didn't make much of an impression on me. ccovell is right that the music is good, but that's the only thing I can remember about it.

I've mainly played Pulstar and Blazing Star and think their absolutely superb. Really want to try Last Resort and Prehistoric Isle 2.
Also want to try Brikinger (Ironclad), although mainly to see what it's like, as you hear so many mixed reviews about it.
Overall I'd say Neo Geo is like Dreamcast shmups-wise. Comparatively few shmups, but most of them are top-notch games.

Re: Favorite Neo shmups
My opinion where I have one:
Aero Fighters 2 - Good but buy Strikers instead
Aero Fighters 3 - As above
Alpha Mission 2 - Old School but fun
Andro Dunos - ?
Blazing Star - A whole lot of side scrolling fun
Captain Tomaday - Rubbish... Not a shooter
Ghost Pilots - Really bad
Ironclad (Neo CD only) ?
Last Resort - Hard - buy Pulstar instead
Prehistoric Isle 2 - Good - buy BS instead
Pulstar - Good if a bit hard
Strikers 1945+ - Good
Twinkle Star Sprites - ?
Viewpoint - Too hard (very pretty)
Zed Blade -?

it's a very good emu. My only gripe is that sometimes fighters will play too fast.extrarice wrote:I've only had the good fortune to play Pulstar, but dang that one's sweet. A brutal R-Type knock-off.
Hmmm, I must look into that Neo4all...my DC is sitting around gathering dust...
I'm slowly building my own compatibility list since every other one I see just states whether the game 'works' or not. I figured shmuper's could use a bit more in depth approach :p
Check it out

Aero Fighters 2 - This is a bit better than its sequel. Aero Fighters 1 was he better game compared to AF 2 & 3 imo.
Aero Fighters 3 - Very memorable Boss Music, but the WWII crafts just didn't quite fit into the game's theme.
Alpha Mission 2 - Quite Boring
Andro Dunos - This is the type of shooter that if you die you might as well give up, as you'll never be able to power up your primary weapon.
Blazing Star - Insane difficulty level, with some of the nastiest laser beams fired be the Bosses that fill up the whole screen. The colours used for the levels & sprites look a bit weird.
Captain Tomaday - Similar vertical cute em up theme to Twin Bee.
Ghost Pilots - Nice early 90's graphics & cool secondary Bombs, but the game play sucks.
Ironclad (Neo CD only) - Nice graphics that are similar to Progear No Arashi on CPS-2
Last Resort - This is a must! Similar graphics & gameplay to R-Type & same huge Mecha Bosses.
Prehistoric Isle 2 - Quite boring really, but has some cool pre-rendered graphics.
Pulstar - Better than its sequel (Blazing Star) with gorgeous graphics & music. It is possible to 1'cc this unlike Blazing Star.
Strikers 1945+ - The Boss music kicks ass compared to the SH-2 version. The pink bullets & explosions look great.
Twinkle Star Sprites - ?
Viewpoint - Very innovative shooter if you're into that 270 degrees perspective.
Zed Blade - Nice Techno soundtrack & some cool morphing Bosses.
Those F-16 planes in level 1 look totally misplaced imo.

Dude, you've got to share your list. I wonder how many MSX games made itShatterhand wrote: I think its the only Neo-Geo game that made to my top 150 games of all time I made one day when I was really bored
As for Zed Blade, how much does that usually go for on MVS? I saw a guy selling a complete (or maybe near complete) kit of it on neo-geo.com for $190! I had always thought it was a common game for a few years.
