Well, I really don't feel like reviving this thread, but I have to anyways since now Akai Katana (after 3 months, lol) is now a Games on Demand title for the cost of $25/£20 for the respective NA/PAL region.

Not in any way unusual. Plenty of hyped-up, big-budget console releases have gone to GoD or PSN Full Games after only a few months on the market. Hell, Mass Effect 3 was on PSN at launch.

Well, just updating stuff is my thing, and yes even though I have it on disc anyways, have to get back to it lately. That is all.

I just noticed something:

In this video you can hear Botan and Kikyou talking at the start of each stage and at the start of midbosses. Is it just me, because in RSG's american release of the game, it seems that the voicing was cut down to just at the start of stage 1 and at each of the bosses!

If this is the case and it's not just an issue with me, what the fuck gives?

That was the first print bonus for the Japanese version.

Extra voices were put in for the start of each stage, mid boss, and I think when the boss is almost dead. It adds more drama during the battle.

I think there are extra voices every time you switch plane mode to ninja mode or vice versa.

Ah, I see. I notice now the PCB ver is missing those. So basically, we missed out on the bonus extra voices, alas. Wasn't there a full-voice print or something for the Deathsmiles port too? Were those voices left out in the american release as well then?

Sucks doesn't it? Missed out on that.

Yeah, a tad irritating, although thankfully it's nothing really gameplay related like how the american release of DaiFukkatsu missed out on a release of Ketsuipachi.

You obviously know this, but there was no American release of DFK.

Er, yeah I guess I meant european release of DFK, the apparently region-free DDP:R.

Yea it's true, Cave re-released that game as a different edition with Ketsui elements, and with Evaccaneer Doom/HIVAC as one of the bosses in that edition. ^^;

It would have been neat if the rest of the world got that version localized (with the Ketsuipachi segments translated too), but at least it is still available as an import and even comes bundled with a cheaper double pack release of both that game and the earlier DDP:DFK game.

Even the achievements are different between both versions.

Yeah, but the kicker, and yes, they're in both NA/PAL ports, is that you can actually hear the extra voices in the tutorial around the end of the vids where they speak in a live demonstration (in St.1), kinda defeats the purpose there, and would have been free DLC or on-disc either way, but nope...Also, still have to go back into it sometime...

Amazon has this for just under $18, if anyone hasn't picked it up, yet.

Just finished it. Enjoyed it a lot more than Deathsmiles, but it still felt a touch chaotic.

Loved some of the boss bullet patterns, their summoning of vehicles made them ridiculous.

Wish it had more story to go with the gorgeous artwork.

Did you read the instruction booklet? It's pretty revealing about the premise and characters. Enough to ruminate on, at least.

Yep, loved it, but I expected more monologues from the bosses. Guess that never was a Cave thing.

Should have gotten the Japanese version with the Full Voice first-press-only DLC. They just don't shut up with that thing on.

Giving this game a go again when I have the time. I can chain stages 1, 2, and 3 pretty decently while cashing in on the midbosses. Haven't really figured out decent scoring on bosses but I don't really care. As long as I can get all of the extends. As usual, the third stage boss is proving to be a bit difficult but I've only fought him a handful of times.

I miss playing shooters : (

Is this about my game freezing?

With regard to that, Rising Star Games got back to me after a while and sent me a replacement copy that was described as a "new build" of the game. I'm still testing over the long term, but for the moment it looks like the problems are gone.

If anyone at RSG is reading this: thanks again for the help!

Necrobump!

I have the same freezing problem at the loading screen before the first level starts. It seems to do freeze after I play it a few times, but not if it's right after I turn on the console. It's the only game that does this...
