Apart from silverguns level design, its unique factors are its chaining, length, cinemas and weapon system. Gameply music etc.
Really all That comes to mind is thunder force 5 with its style, 3D enemies and interchangabe weapon system aside from that its a hori not vert.
If you want a silvergun clone then get chaos field but nothing compares to the real thing.
Edit. sorry chaos field is GC and DC not PS

can you level up the weapon power in Thunderforce 5 like Radiant?Diabollokus wrote:Apart from silverguns level design, its unique factors are its chaining, length, cinemas and weapon system. Gameply music etc.

Actually you can in a sense level up your weapon in tf5.
However not to like level 33 forward shot a la silvergun.
for the first 5 levels in tf5 you can upgrade your standard weapon to level 3 also each weapon has its own special attack. however in level 6 your ship is physically upgraded including weapons. but the upgrading weapons thing really dosen't matter that much in thunder force 5.
In silvergun its necessary to actually kill the bosses in the time limit, the big carrier in Victim stage, I can't kill that mofo with default weapon levels before it self destructs, let alone kill enemies fast enough to chain em.

R-Type: No similarities. R-Type is a sidescroller, has no chaining system, no real weapon "upgrades" per se, you either have them or you don't as opposed to RSG weapon "leveling up".Pshooter wrote:hmm.. what about R-Type Delta, G Darius?
G-Darius: Again, no real similarities. It is also a side scroller. It does have a little more leveling up as far as the weapons go.
Einhander only saves the gunpods you've discovered, so you can start the game with one of the heavy-duty pods if you so desire. But that's it.Pshooter wrote:from what i understand, isn't Einhander the only PS1 shmup where you can save your upgrades (gunpods), even when you turn the game off? kinda like how in Radiant you save your leveling up.
There is not a PS1 shmup that's the equivalent to Silvergun, simple as that. You will not find a "Not-quite-as-Radiant Bronzegun" available for 10 bucks. The combination of the game's features is pretty much unique. There are games that are similar in some ways to RS, but then they lack some other features. I'm fairly sure not one PS1 shmup has color-coded chaining, for instance.
And I thank the Great Maker for that.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

SoukyuGurentai looks like it's impossible to find for the PS1, ebay only has it for the Saturn. Same with www.play-asia.com.

I found a PS1 copy of Souky on eBay not too long ago for around 10 bucks...it doesn't show up as often as the Saturn version does, but it's not particularly in demand, be patient and you ought to be able to find it before too long.
As for a RSG equivalent...heck, there really isn't one, in my view, on PS1 or anywhere else, really.

you just want it because of the music? why not just download the soundtracks (official or saturn rip) plenty of people here have soukyugurentai or rsg, sure you could get someone to rip the audio for you. urp, unless they aren't redbook. in which case you'll need to shell out actual money for it :<

You will need a boot disc or some such thing to play Souky on a US system, not sure which discs are or aren't compatible with it though. Be aware, however, that the Saturn version (or the Otokuyo release, they're the same game) is considered by most to be the better port, and I know for a fact that an Action Replay or ST Key will work with it (though there are apparently a few minor bugs with the original version). IIRC PS Souky got a re-release too, I think that's the version I got...Pshooter wrote:I will look into importing Souky, if for no other reason because Hitoshi Sakimoto is one of my favorite composers (Radiant Silvergun and Vagrant Story are pure brilliance). do i need an import device (like action replay) to play it on my US PS1 ?
no i dont want it just for the music, but it doesnt hurt to have a god-like composer writing the score... If anyone knows where to download the soundtrack please let me know! this review makes the game sound pretty fantastic:kidneythief wrote:you just want it because of the music? why not just download the soundtracks (official or saturn rip) plenty of people here have soukyugurentai or rsg, sure you could get someone to rip the audio for you. urp, unless they aren't redbook. in which case you'll need to shell out actual money for it :<

I will have a copy in bout a week and I could rip it for you (if its redbook audio which I bet it is), but theres other people here who already have a copy, also you could download it on Soulseek. Theres one guy there that I grabbed like every taito/zuntata soundtrack off of, he might have it. Big japan music community there, good place to check...
also, if I didn't mention this before, you can get a copy of soukyugurentai for like 30 bucks on ebay, search for "souky*" because sometimes they separate soukyu and gurentai in the listing
I know because I just recently bought mine up for 30 bucks, the guy had the rerelease too for the same price, doesn't look like anybody bought it so he might re list it

Souky is good, but you might want to take a look at Icaru's Strategy thread for it:

As with most any Raizing game, there's more going on behind the scenes than there appears, and it can restrict your play style. Not to say that the game still isn't good, but it's best to be aware of exactly what it is you're buying, right?

granted I havn't played soukyugurentai yet on account of not actually having a copy yet.... but let go of the "RAIZING GAMES HAVE THE RANK SYSTEM WHICH MAKE IT SO FRUSTRATING AND IMPOSSIBLE" it's really not that bad.. Doesn't affect the game as much as people say, only thing I really notice is the enemy hitpoints... but if you're used to that from sonic wings, whats the problem?

I think giving a little warning as to what the game is like and that it is an aquired taste is trying to be helpful, rather than an attempt to start another rank debate.kidneythief wrote:granted I havn't played soukyugurentai yet on account of not actually having a copy yet.... but let go of the "RAIZING GAMES HAVE THE RANK SYSTEM WHICH MAKE IT SO FRUSTRATING AND IMPOSSIBLE" it's really not that bad.. links to 3 songs from Souky, all three for the most part have the sweet urgency of the Radiant soundtrack:

The audio on the Saturn version of Soukyuugurentai is all produced internally by the Saturn (save for 4 tracks of music which are DA... the other 50 tracks of DA music are from 3 other Raizing games: Mahou Daisakusen, Shippu Mahou Daisakusen and Battle Garegga). Same goes for Radiant Silvergun and any other ST-V ports for that matter.
I don't know if the PS1 version uses redbook or yellowbook, but yellowbook seems to be the norm with PS1 games.

PS1 version also seems generated internally. Only streams I noticed on the disc were the voices for the arrange mode/cutscenes. Music also seems to be missing accents in some parts (see: 1st boss).Kiken wrote:I don't know if the PS1 version uses redbook or yellowbook, but yellowbook seems to be the norm with PS1 games.
