Ironically, the erotic stuff for Eros Comix Toren Smith wrote about at the end was semi-censored in that the dialogue was either altered a bit or they chose not to release entire vignettes. I wouldn't touch that stuff unless I knew I was getting the original 8)

I see - interesting - and kinda shit - as someone says in those posts, they should just not release it...

Wasn't aware that Gunsmith Cats was edited. Great. At least Dark Horse did put out a second edition of Ghost in the Shell with the sex intact, albeit flipped pages.

Initial D has a similar scene in volume 1, kind of jarring for the series. It wouldn't hurt the manga if it had taken that out.

Of course, who ever heard of a Western comic being censored in the past twenty years?

Thanks to Scott McCloud, Maus and Persepolis, "graphic novels" are now academically recognized here as ARTISTIC EXPRESSION, while manga is still pervy junk for kids and nerds.

Remember when that guy in Iowa got thrown in prison for importing eromanga? And not even the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was able to acquit him?

are they actual animations about making anime? or an actual docu type thing? -

I suppose what I mean is you know interviews etc. - things like that - like a History Of Sunrise or Gainax or something (if they exist)...

Those are fiction shows about making of fiction shows, but since the makers obviously know their stuff, I assume the settings to be factually accurate. Think Beggars and Choosers.
Hit o Nerae! is fairly crass but short (and the show it's about actually exists). Gintama and Golden Boy are excellent.

I've been digging through my VHS collection for anime I haven't watched in years. A few I recommend:

Dominion: Tank Police. The four episode OAV prequel to the manga version. It's a great show in general, but its the English dub that makes it hilarious.

Venus Wars. Big budget war story with the coolest unicycles in the universe. Only let down by a rushed third act that I presume had to be overly condensed from the manga. Out of print since Central Park Media went under, Eastern Star are releasing a new DVD edition in September.

They Were Eleven. An excellent Hard SF/mystery movie with that classic early 80s anime look and feel.

Goshogun: The Time Étranger. A strange film by any measure, but even stranger when you realise that it's the sequel to an early 80s super robot show, but neither has any robots in it nor any of the trappings of the genre. Instead, this is an eerie, slow paced and at times downright surreal story that either takes place across three time periods or primarily inside the mind of a dying character, depending on how you interpret it. Feels like a cross between early Mamoru Oshii and Osamu Dezaki. Released under the title Time Stranger by US Manga Corps, it's out of print, but there are still some copies going for $6 on Amazon. Grab it while you can.

The only anime I've seen about making anime is Animation Runner Kuromi. These are two short OAVs. The first is great and funny, the second not so much.

I see - I will check them out thanks :)

I jus finished Yamato Episode 22 (the big space battle) - absolutely incredible space dogfighting action

Venus Wars is brilliant and one of my favourite's drawings wise, just incredible

That may be because most mainstream manga is pervy junk for kids and nerds.

Otaku No Video is part mockumentary, part cartoon OAV 8)

Yeah, I was gonna recommend Otaku no Video as well. Would probably be a bit better if they'd have stuck with just the animation, though.

Cool yeah I've seen that and love it - I think Imma rewatch it in a while when I can understand some more of the references (when I watched it all I had seen was MSG and NGE)

i know in the 'anime/manga' thread is probably wrong place to ask, but are there no 'live action' docus about it?

cos like on Imaginenation or wotever on NHK I even kinda like it when it's about the sort of shit I pretty much blatantly hate, I still enjoy watching the little clips of people drawing/designing etc.

You should be reading it, it's better than the anime. Also read Pluto, best Urasawa manga by far.

You cannot compare anime to manga. They're two/too different things. It's better to compare manga with other manga. For instance, I'd read anything by Katsura Masakazu any day, even though it's totally moe. Yes, it's moe, but it is very well-drawn moe 8)

Yes, you can absolutely compare them. And, like most adaptations, anime based on manga is vastly inferior to the original work (the opposite is also true; see manga Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop).

I hate Katsura. Art wise, he generally draws nice faces but makes hilarious anatomy mistakes (like giving people two left feet, six fingers, etc).

November 13 is going to be an awesome day. Serial Experiments Lain and Children Who Chase Voices from Deep Below are both getting US Blu-ray releases then.

Lain is eighty bucks, though. Ouch. They know that ABe dorks like myself are going to buy it no matter what, and they're right. (I bought the DVDs immediately after they went out of print, before the price shot up.)

No, you cannot make an apt comparison as they are not the same thing. You could compare them, of course, but it would not be a good comparison. It's like comparing the taste of orange with the colour of orange - it makes no sense 8)

Stop throwing around the term "moe" in reference to older works, it didn't become a thing until the mid-2000s.

"Moe" signifies a very distinct blobby, featureless style of character design.

Dude, stop saying nonsense. There's nothing wrong in saying, for example, that Blade of the Immortal anime is utter shit compared to the manga. Samura's art is lost, the character personalities are fucked up, the story changes for the worse, and a large etc. The manga tells the same story better than the anime.

Again, you are comparing two things that are unlike each other. I'm sure you'd see no problem with comparing manga to the music in the anime... the manga was better in your opinion 8)

Wow man, you surely can't be this dense. Both are telling a story. The manga tells that story better. Hence it's the best incarnation of that story.

Is that simplified enough for you to understand?

Maybe if I s-p-e-l-l it out for you:

I'm not comparing the stories, but the method in which they are told. There are many ways to say the same thing, whether it's through books, music, pictures, etc. What I've been saying all along is that you cannot make a proper comparison between two different methods of telling a story, which is what you are doing, pelotudo 8)

If the anime's method of telling the story makes the story worse, then it's worse than the original.
