At work, they want to make us change to iphonys, but I'd prefer a Blackberry (or anything else that comes with actual buttons). I don't like touch screens and my fingers fumble too much with that tiny interface.

As a phone, the Blackberry is absolutely great -- makes calls, sends email/text/IRC brilliantly, etc.
For anything above and beyond that call [web browsing, applications, etc], it is crap, crap, crap. Mostly because it is extremely slow.

It would be nice if they would let you use an Android phone, there are ones with a proper slide-out keyboard.

And yeah, the Sony jogwheel was the best thing ever. I remember having a Clie back when Palm was actually relevant, the jogwheel was so fast and nice to use.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

That sucks. I only like telephones to make telephone calls, not anything else. Our section wants it in order to replace the land lines - this means I'll be tethered to this damn thing the whole day rather than answering telephone messages and e-mails just from the office. I know the Android is the best telephone for everything else, but they're not going to spring for that.

That makes no sense. There are android phones which are superior to iPhone in every regard (price, size, display, cpu). And unlike iOS, Android's GUI actually supports multi-tasking (welcome to 1974).

lulz
After we debated that first patent -- what was prior art --because we had a hard time believing there was no prior art, that there wasn't something out there before Apple. In fact we skipped that one so we could go on faster. It was bogging us down.
Gah, all those details and facts. I hate when they get in the way of my landmark patent lawsuit decisions.

Major facepalm. Maybe grounds for appeal? Fucking jury.

Although that makes it look as if they were inclined to go against Apple on prior art, which is obviously not what happened. Again, fucking jury.

Not sure what this guy's point is, or rather he didn't back up the lead claim that I saw.

If anything, this lawsuit once again demonstrated that the American jury system and patent system are crap. I see no benefit in letting 12 clueless people decide highly technical cases with potentially far-reaching consequences. The current patent system is a joke, allowing large corporations to file and hoard patents for stuff that existed long before or isn't patent-worthy in the first place and thereby preventing competition and progress. Furthermore, they need to do away with bullshit like software patents and genetic patents yesterday- thank the flying spaghetti monster that these are invalid in Europe.

But if everyone had an iPhone, what would you have left in your life to feel smug about?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Well, the patent system is only as good as the examinations given. People working at the patent office generally are there only as a stepping stone to corporate jobs, because everybody resents Uncle Sam paying for the best employees. That's unfortunate, and it arguably leads to many cases not being thoroughly researched for prior art or the rules for patent application not being rigorously followed.

I also had a thought about what might have happened here: The jury might not have been inclined to grant Apple's patents (the comments about "playing Patent Office" from the interview). I think it is pretty clear that at least some patents Apple held should not have been granted, although perhaps not all of them (the jury did find only $1BN in damages as opposed to $2.5BN), so if they had felt that, they would have had to resort to jury nullification to effectively overrule the PTO - but judges generally don't allow juries freedom to do this (even if it is legal and constitutional, it's always been controversial).

does anyone else think that even if apple forces everyone to remove ubiquitous functions, such as "pinch-to-zoom", android users will just add them back at some site, possibly called screwyouapple.com?

I think the only place that has software patents are the US of A. You may just have to download your Android software elsewhere.

well, everyone else does have patents related to processes and functionality. this same case was brought to court in many other countries so far, just with different outcomes. I think it has mostly to do with where the jury was drawn from.

It's (obviously and understandably) a one-sided add, only mentioning Samsung only features opposed to no apple-only features.
But in reality it is true, specs-wise the iphone 5 is inferior to the SIII.

Apple really rely on their fans and their devotion as this isn't THAT much of an update to warrant buying this new if you got a 4 or 4s.

It's not really the spec that sells iphones over anything else, it's the interface and app developer support, which has become so intuitive and vast in options that people are trapped in a comfort zone.

I'm sure google couldn't agree more. But it was Steve Jobs that promised to "bury" Android for "copying" iOS. Hopefully Apple will someday realize that guy was just a dick.

You dont get to the top without stepping on a few people. They are all pretty much as bad as one another. Apple being highlighted right now. I am dropping my iphone4 for the top end samsung as i hate what it does to my PC with the shitty itunes.

I don't think Jobs was a dick. The motivation behind his ambitions always struck me as quite forward thinking. From a business perspective he might be considered a dick, but then to others he's a guru, depends on how you view the playing field.

I'm thinking about going for the Galaxy Note 2, is that the one you mean? It's like a mini-tablet with phone functionality, but I've seen some vids and it looks like a really powerful device.

Also, is there a better alternative to iTunes for music libraries?

Nope

But fear not! There is NotPod

I use it to sync iTunes with my HTC EVO 3D and my HP TouchPad. It will work with any mass storage class device.

Doesn't quite give you the same level of integration as with an iPod / iPhone, but it does allow you to keep using iTunes to manage your music and sync it with whatever device you want.

And it's fucking free. Hi Score!
