Apple vs. Samsung

And Sony CLIÉ SL10, 2002

EDIT: Or maybe it would be more appropriate to say that Apple's iPhone started as a Star Trek ripoff
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/PADD

So much for Apple suing Samsung for copying them. LOL, patent law.

Really though, Apple didn't invent the smartphone. So what is this, a Billion dollar lawsuit about rounded edges? Which clearly existed before? WTF.

None of these things are all very different from those PDAs that were around in the 90s.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

(the correct word would be add-on)

This case is doing an excellent making it obvious that the courts have zero understanding of design process. Both sides are full of shit and the court seems clueless.

Yeah I don't know why company fans (and anti-fans) get so crazy about this sort of thing. It's really just business manoevering, as annoying as it is. Samsung and Apple have even been described as "frenemies" since Samsung makes a bunch of important parts for them. It kinda reminds me of pro wrestling.. or politics!

Look at that frame grab! Gosh, I wish modern displays were that conservative with space use.

Nice find, but if I was them I'd just point out that Star Trek had pad computers since the first show from 1966, and starting with Next Generation (1987) they looked very much like iPads, especially the PADDs used since DS9 (from 1993) look nearly identical. Rounded edges too, oh noes!

Yeah, well apparently the law doesn't like being told that science fiction is better at their jobs than they are.

In any case the Knight Ridder thing's use is more obviously functional instead of the usual Star Trek Jeffries art or Okudagrams - actually, Knight Ridder's video seems to show it actually working (that pen is being used to click on things onscreen). Interesting how fast they moved with the design - the lab that built this demo was just in its second year when they came out with this.

i don;t know how its possible to invent anything without running over someones toes.

Most success is in the marketting not the product itself. I think the Galaxy S3 will outsell most phones for the forseeable future anyway.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

If you truly invented it there is never any possibility of running over someone's toes. The problem is patents protecting ideas for people that didn't invent them.

So Apple won. (Didn't feel like creating a new topic)

Except for the round edges thing, the jury completely agreed with Apple and awarded $1 Billion in damages (Apple had demanded $2.5 Billion). I wonder if a South Korean court (instead of one 15 miles away from Apples's headquarters) would have decided the same way? :P Yay, protectionism.

Samsung is going to appeal.

Food for thought: Samsung is one of the most important component suppliers for Apple's products. Now if I was in Samsung's position, I would consider a little renegotiating...

Actually, yesterday a South Korean jury found Samsung did not infringe Apple, although they thought both infringed previous designs:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/ ... story.html

I don't know what the juries heard and saw in both cases, but my immediate reaction is that the SK jury got it exactly right and my fellow Americans got it wrong. The American jury should have spent less time fucking around with models of the phones and tablets and more time looking at those early works - like the Knight Ridder video or looking at previous designs.

In any case, I don't thing juries have any business deciding these decisions. They can't meaningfully be "peers" to industry in a case like this. You need experts (and by experts I don't mean junior patent examiners, though).

The wheel-dial on a Sony phone is the best invention/feature for mobile phones ever.
I had one back in the day.
-pick up phone
-rotate the wheel, ah there´s the contact I need
-press the wheel
The phone is calling a contact.
The Sony phone I had died at some point. I want one again. a phone with a dial-wheel.
Does a site excist that list all phones with pictures that were ever made?

This was addressed a long time ago; the parts division of Samsung is completely separate from the consumer division. They supply parts to a lot of different vendors, including Samsung itself.

When the judge blocked the testemony of the designer of Samsung's F700 a week ago, that was a clear indicator of which way this was going.

Fuck yes. That's the first thing I thought of too when I saw that picture of the Clie.

The Nokia 7110 had a similar kind of click wheel, only on the front and not on the side:
