That's unfair. You don't just pay so you can play the games you already paid for online, you also pay so you can access premium services like Netflix, which you then have to pay for, or services like youtube that are free everywhere else. What's not to like?

I'm happy with PSN because the amount I play online it has to be free to be viable.

If your hardcore 16 hours a day and want the very best online experience i can imagine live is better.

Friendly seems to be only interested in hardware, game studios, and digital rights. He's a smart guy, but I have nooo idea why he likes this website.

Hahah, no, I'm no ESA plant. I really do like 2D shooters; I'd say that most of my game library (across all systems) consists of shmups. I just don't play them competitively or obsessively. While I don't credit feed, I don't really care about hi-scores (oh no, the horror).
As to why I'm here: A few notable (and vocal) exceptions aside, this forum is populated by more intelligent members than most other video game boards. It's really refreshing to talk about gaming-related stuff with people who are not morons. Digital consumer-rights (or the lack thereof) is an issue whose importance is largely underappreciated at present, which is why I occasionally bring it up when it's warranted. And yes, I also like good gaming hardware. So there you have it.

Far from raising the issue, I'd expect that an ESA plant would try to derail/silence any discussion of DRM (or SOPA/PIPA, COICA, international DMCA clones, etc.) because they're largely the guys who want you to take it for granted.

The main reasons people pay for Gold are:

The multiplayer games they want to play are 360-exclusive.
Most of their friends play on 360.
They view party-chat as a valuable feature.

Everything else Gold offers is viewed merely as added value. I strongly doubt that more than a few pay for Gold just to use Netflix/Youtube or other things like that.

A credit card isn't required for Gold. Subscription codes can be purchased separately.

People who steal XBL accounts don't have direct access to a user's credit card information, and not all accounts that are stolen have credit cards associated with them. The only thing they can do with the account is buy content on XBL (usually in the form of FIFA12 DLC, since it can easily be resold online) with the MS points or payment methods already on the accounts.
