best xbox1 picture for hdtv?

Post by blackoak »

I recently got a copy of Steel Battalion for the original xbox (thank you, OT mech thread). I'm borrowing a friend's console just for this game... my question is, what's the best possible image setup for an xbox and an LCD hdtv? I've got an xrgb3, but I recall that it doesn't really help for content above 240p. Thanks!

Buy the component cable.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

yeah, just got it! my battletech dreams of youth are about to come true.

component cable is the best option? i thought there might be an intermediary piece of hardware that would help, but if not, that makes it easy.

You're thinking of the HDTV adapter which was available for the XBox. The XBox does output component on it own, but initially MS released a breakout adapter which only provided RCA component connectors and let you use your own cables. A real component "cable" was only released much later.

I plan to play Steel Battalion again some when, might even go so far as to try and beat the bloody hard campaign. Ideally though I'd like to try and to some online battles via system link networking for old times sake.

Any who, I've not really dabbled with anything else but an RGB SCART cable on the Xbox, so with a proper component cable, does it output 480p/576p for pretty much all games?

Yeah, 480p is pretty much standard for an Xbox game. Some games even did 720p (Soulcalibur II and one of the Tony Hawk games come to mind).

Cool, I guess its simple. I've already got the component cables for the xbox too. I thought I read on Fudoh's page that a few (expensive) pieces of hardware helped with xbox image processing, but I guess it isn't necessary? Is a 480p image capable of "improvement" on a modern HDTV? Basic questions, I know...

Are your xbox an ntsc, or a pal model? If is a european PAL model you won't get any progressive scan resolution with the component cables. The NTSC model will detect your component cable conected and will let you choose the resolutions available up to 1080i. In the PAL models you can use a small utility called region changer or something like that, and it will make you turn your xbox in NTSC and allow the progressive scan resolutions and the 1080i. 95% of the xbox games will then output in 480P or higher, there is no need to buy anything else, but you can try that game in a xbox 360 to see if its compatible, if so, it will give you a better image.

and if a game doesn't support at least 480p, you can patch it to at least gain that.
