Anyone happens to own a classic GBA AC adapter?

Post by tcancian »

I've found one here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-Game-B ... 3378d7b50d

But it's in japanese 100v format, I know there was a limited US and UK release but if anyone happens to own one of these, what kind of adapter fits in? Would a Nintendo DS/Lite AC adapter be compatible or maybe GBA SP? I'm also aware of third party alternatives, but first-party just looks better :D.

Not sure if this thread should be at Off-Topic, but it's still Hardware.

I'd be willing to bet the adapter will take whatever flavour of power you want to throw at it (100-240V), but you would probably need a plug adapter to fit it into the wall socket.

I can't find out a compatibility chart to check if an AC adapter from GBA SP would be compatible, apparently not many people bought this accessory.

The port format seems to be proprietary and specific for the first GBA model.

I believe starting with the SP they began using built-in rechargeable batteries, so the design is quite a bit different than the GBA.

The adapter you're looking at is to charge a rechargeable battery pack that fits where the two AA batteries would normally go in the back of the GBA.

I don't think the GBA has an AC input port -- it was designed only to run on DC power from the batteries.

Yep, GBA SP units have a rechargeable battery built-in indeed. Each unit also comes with its own wall wart for use in those rare moments of down time

Speaking of which, wouldn't the newer GBAs be more desirable for the possibility of a slightly less blurred screen (if anybody has tested this - a quick check shows nothing on Google, surprisingly) as well as a native backlight, if you get the 2005 (I think) models ("new brighter screen" marked boxes iirc).

I know the SP is probably much improved over the original in a lot of areas, but the form factor always seemed a bit odd to me. They seem to have realized this and went back to a wider unit with the DS.

They also did the most retarded thing ever for a portable and removed the headphone jack.

My GBA AC adapter is literally a hardwired boxish cable that plugs the GBA straight into the wall.

I had one before that one that was a bit like what you guys have found on eBay but it was el cheapo and carked it pretty quickly.
