Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I watched half of it and gave up. Some great character designs, but it's spoiled by Gonzo's notoriously shoddy production values (like how everything mechanical is cheap 3DCG) and the very boring direction. Just another remake of a classic that never needed a remake.

on episode 7 of FLAG- getting better every episode...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I would not watch Samurai 7 for the same reason - it's a Studio Gonzo CG turd

It was alright, but it was no Area 88 or even Macross PlusKAI wrote:Here's something decent from Gonzo

I should mention that both of their Last Exile series have better-than-usual production values and some pretty awesome CG.I would not watch Samurai 7 for the same reason - it's a Studio Gonzo CG turd
That would be Ai no Kusabi (90's version, not the recent remake). Amazingly depicted cyberpunk world and story, I barely even realized it was about man-love. It sucks that I can't find a good quality rip of the second episode.Best yaoi anime ever.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The best yaoi is Bronze: Cathexis, which Kawajiri Yoshiaki worked in

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I thought the story was fairly well-written for at least for half the series as it kept the suspense and mystery going for a good amount of the show. Sure, there were some cheezorama elements towards the middle and end, but, otherwise, I was impressed by a few things: 1) The writing, esp. the depictions of female super/elite soldiers, 2) the theme songs and background music, 3) the voice acting, and 4) not a lot of CG. I can definitely say the "Marlene Angel" became a very compelling character as the story progressed.BIL wrote:Blue Gender has been pretty cool. I like the "realistic" violence, ie, humans are very fragile things around massive aliens and heavy machinery. xbl0x is right that the designs are pretty bland, but the dangerous atmosphere has kept me interested so far.

In the world of Blue Gender, if a soldier crashes and smashes into a windshield or gets hit by a heavy object, they're most likely going to either get seriously injured or die. The "Blue" they're fighting are fast, formidable, and numerous - if a soldier doesn't die right away from an attack, they'll just run outta ammo, become overwhelmed, and die. The ideas and notions about human life and proper behaviour are gone out the window; life, death, violence, sex are all treated stoically and/or very matter-of-fact; it seems particularly tougher for girls and young women. Honestly, I was kinda taken aback when I saw that initially. I was thinking, "Did I just see what I think I saw...

I've been watching Cyber Formula Sin.
It was nice , awesome animation and music, and they race in Argentina on the 3rd chapter heh.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Whoa. Coincidentally, I was watching bits of the original Cyber Formula GPX. I saw it on my video shelves... I forgot I had a Bandai box set.

It was cheezy kid pilot fare. I remember I had an Anime V poster of this show back in 1994, though

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
finished FLAG - liked it a lot though the ending was a little bit of a letdown - still brilliant series though...
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
FLAG has been on my list of shows to watch for a while now, I'll get around to it soon.
I've watched/rewatched some good things lately:
LAIN - Not a huge fan, but I like some of the weird narrative episodes alot
Pet Shop of Horrors - A few of these episodes are fantastic
Neo Tokyo - Brilliant
Memories - Also Brilliant
Iria - Not outstanding, but still very cool
GitS:SAC Solid State Society - was okay, but seemed a bit halfassed compared to the series
GitS 2 Innocence - I loved it for the second time
Freedom - excellent
Cowboy Bebop - still one of the best after all these years

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Just rewatched Adolescence Rush, the alternate-universe Utena movie. Still as amazing as ever; it feels exactly like a Rintaro work even though it's not. This is the kind of directing style Akiyuki Shinbo tries and fails again and again at aping, but pulled off flawlessly.
I highly recommend the latter part to fans of arcade racing games. I can't help but wonder if it was Sega's influence creeping in; they were the sponsors who made the figures and the Saturn visual novel (their logo shows up after Shochiku's).

Utena is an excellent series. I still have my Software Sculptors DVDs

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I watched episode 1 of Dirty Pair, I kinda liked it but I didn't really know what was going on - does it explain more about them as the show goes on?

This is Hirano Toshihiro classic stuff - the manga AND the OAV. He also directed the Dangaioh and Hades Project Zeorymer OAVs... as well as Vampire Miyu

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Dirty Pair is like my favorite thing ever. Probably getting them tattooed on my back at some point. Will easily get me some points with the ladies. Not much is said about them during the show, other than they fuck up a lot and usually break/destroy/get people killed, hence the "dirty". The light novels expand on their meeting and such. Mughi was originally a coeurl, which is an alien that looks like a big panther, except it's extremely intelligent and has two tentacles behind it's head with two suction cups. Essentially a Displacer Beast if you ever played D&D or whatever. In the show/OVAs/movies he was just replaced by an intelligent, large feline of some type.ancestral-knowledge wrote:another wortwile title and a short one:

yes I was just about to post that i've seen episode 5 now and I'm starting to love it - haha I loved the scene in I think episode 2 when they're crash landing that massive spaceliner and they smash 2 skyscrapers in half and the boss guy is like 'mission solved' instead of 'wtf did you just do to the city!!!???'drauch wrote: Dirty Pair is like my favorite thing ever. I also really like all the analogue synth sounds in it - classic stuff

Hell, I even dig the rehash Dirty Pair Flash series. I know you hate it, but it gives me 90s nostalgia for the times I was rarin' to get my meathooks on thesedrauch wrote:Dirty Pair is like my favorite thing ever. Dude, don't even get me started on Gantz. Easily one of the most shit produced anime shows in recent memory (Including Lucky Star). "Disgusting" is the only word that comes to mind. And I'm not talking about the violence or the titties; those I don't mind.I watched half of it and gave up. Some great character designs, but it's spoiled by Gonzo's notoriously shoddy production values.
