Rolling-Start.com launches

Post by Ghegs »

I feel slightly uncomfortable advertising like this, but since I know many people here play racing games as well, here goes.

I like arcade racing games a lot, but have always been kind of bummed out that there isn't a centralized place to talk about them, like there are for shmups and fighters. Older racing games don't get talked about much at all online, even though they are still perfectly playable and fun. I'd love to get some time attack competition going on in something like Sega Rally or Side By Side or an older Ridge Racer. So I finally decided to make such a place myself: http://www.rolling-start.com/forum/

I'm hoping it'll be a gathering place for arcade racing game fans with discussions of techniques, comparing track times and finding new cool racing games to play. The forum is ready and fully functioning, but as it's still starting up here's a good chance for people to let their voice be heard and let me know what kind of a forum they want. What kind of subforums should there be? Things like that.

So, please check it out.

Does the forum includes simulation racing (Gran Turismo, Forza, Codemasters F1 games)? Would be nice to organize some races if there's enough interest.

I tried to register, but the question wouldn't accept "daytona".

edit: doh. forgot it was sega rally. Anyway, I used up my registration attempts for the session and I still want to register.

It does now! I've only added a single "Sim Racing" subforum for now to cover all of them. If need be, I can make more for individual series and make a cleaner split between arcade-style racers and simulation racing.

You should be able to try registering again after closing the browser and re-starting it.

Side By Side/Battle Gear is a rather underappreciated series It deserves to be mentioned alongside Daytona or Ridge Racer. Taito should do an HD version of this also. You'd think that with the Type X2 porting frenzy, we'd have seen at least Battle Gear 4 making it over.

Namco should consider a No Nitrous mode in Ridge Racer 8. Sometimes going back to the roots of RR sounds like fun.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Seconded, I love that game. I played the whole thing a couple of months ago, all my records are still registered. I could post them to get the ball rolling.

I'm not big on racing games, but that's a brilliant choice for a forum name. Well done.

Good idea, I've now added an F-Zero subforum. If you want to post Time Attack records, just use the time attack forum - if it starts looking cluttered up, I'll make subforums for each series or individual game as it happens. This part is still finding its final form, it's very different from shmups high scores where one game might only have one table for scores. Within a single racing game there are dozens or even hundreds of tracks that each need their own table.
njiska wrote:I'm not big on racing games, but that's a brilliant choice for a forum name. Well done.
It is a great name, but I can't take the credit for it. Maybe two years ago Dandy J started up a site that would cover arcade racing games. There were reviews, forums, videos, the whole shebang. And it was called Rolling Start. However, the site folded. I think there's still a place for a forum relating to these games, so I'm trying to re-start that part.

I did ask, and he was fine with me taking the URL and name.

Site needs a banner to attract people. Something Daytona-themed.

That would be great, but my Photoshop-fu is weak and I don't have the visual eye for things like that. If somebody wants to make one, that'd be much appreciated.

The forums were re-organized a bit, now each series' Time Attack section is a subforum to that series' discussion forum. Should keep things tidy nicely.

Surprised Mario Kart, Blur, Modnation, Diddy Kong, or ____ Kart racing hasn't gotten up there. But that's probably a sign of good taste.

I guess "powerup racing" could be a category. I dunno these things.

"Vehicular combat" is a name, if not much of a genre. Excite Truck technically has got racing and combat (as well as suiciding) affecting one's score, but reminds me of Tony Hawk games rather than any racer. It's about performing the tricks.
Then there's TrackMania - whether it's a racer, a "car platformer" or a "trick game"? Take your pick.
Then other oddities: Burnout Paradise, Midnight Club II (you can run over pedestrians in that one), Crazy Taxi and so on...
P.S. Whoa, didn't know there was TrackMania for the Wii!

Hey now, Mario Kart is awesome. I'm actually replaying the SNES game these days.

A "Kart Racing" forum should cover it - I doubt anyone will show up itching to discuss Twisted Metal  - although I can't imagine it would be very active discussion- or competition-wise.. how much can you really say about Mario Kart? Play as Peach.... if you're a pussy.

One of best things about Mario Kart is that wheel thing I use to play Excite Truck. MK Wii itself I liked best with a DualShock 2, of all controllers.

Type4 time attack competition, please.

I doubt anyone will show up itching to discuss Twisted Metal
The first two Twisted Metal games and Black are actually very solid, and reasonably balanced for competition. The rest of the series (and all the ripoffs like Vigilante 8) can be safely ignored, though. Of course, they have no place in an arcade racing forum.

If Backyard Wrestling didn't have Shaggy 2 and Violent J as playable characters, Twisted Metal would be the most juggalo game series ever.

The Mario Kart series has a very competitive, high-level TT community, including many Japanese players. It's funny how you discredit cart racers, yet they share more in common with what you probably consider to be more "serious" games such as RR, Daytona, Outrun, F-Zero etc, than do the Gran Turismos and Forzas of the world.

Wow, talk about ignorant. That's like joining the shmups forum and saying "Well how much can you really say about shooters? You dodge and you shoot". Every game has its nuances.

lol @ MK not even being listed in the Others forum, yet Sega All-Stars Racing is present in the Sega forum

It's there now. I simply forgot about Mario Kart when I was writing the description (I don't own any of the games), it wasn't meant as commentary against the series. Sega All-Stars Racing was put in because the game case was staring at me from the shelf. If MK gets enough attention I'll even make a subforum just for the series. Or maybe I'll make a separate Kart Racers subforum. The forum schema will respond to what people want to talk about.

I though of it more as joining shmups forum and talking about the ins and outs of euroshmups. Glad to hear I'm wrong.
