Geometry Wars: Galaxies - the controls

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

I've yet to decide which way suits me better. The laser thing and reticule looks cool...
Puzzlingly, the manual says you can swap the controls to move with a Wiimote and aim with a thumbstick, but I didn't find this option in Preferences.
The game's slowly growing on me. Only the beginning is lethargic and having to unlock the "quick blast" planets is weird in a game labelled as the purest arcade shooter out there, as is having to laboriously upgrade already unlocked drone bahaviour patterns. That said, while the marriage of arcade purity and achievement candy is awkward, it is quite a sentimental journey to the days of my exhausting Spectre Supreme runs. Even the music gets less sedative and, at the very least, the cover art is less embarrassing than that of DDP: Resurrection.
P.S. Never mind the poll, I give up.

Your poll is busted; probably try removing the numbers.

Really liked the Wii/Nunchuk scheme, but I don't have a CC, so...

Perhaps few folks (if any) tested both ways extensively. Maybe I should ask top score players what they use.

I learned wiimote-nunchuck. I won a live tournament round using it. I prefer it now.

The trick is to brace your wiimote arm on the edge of a sofa arm or chair arm so your aim movement is limited but agile.

I tried the wiimite, but gave up after a few hours. Point-aiming works great in dual stick games like Bullet Candy, where there are specific dangerous enemies that need to be sniped from a far distance. In a game like Geometry Wars however, I want to leverage firepower in a specific direction, not snipe a specific point. More often than not when using the wiimote, I'll aim in a direction of the screen, however since my ship isn't dead-center the shot won't go in the direction I want, leading to instant death.

For dual-stick controllers, I suggest the pro version over the regular classic controller. The pro positions the thumbsticks spaced further apart, so you don't hit your thumbs together. The regular classic controller is thumb bumper cars in a game like Geometry Wars.

Love the game, by the way. It's too bad many of the stages have busted A.I. if you survive long enough though. The leaderboards are only useful on certain stages.

I kept doing it this way without even thinking about it. Felt natural after S&P2. In Metroid: Other M (where you aim manually frequently yet briefly) I would hold the remote with both hands all the time. The only explanation I can think of why it's not some people's second nature is that they don't play computer games.
Granted, most of my Wii gaming is done sitting in a chair, which sucks a bit (it's not computer gaming after all). Had to get rid of my sofa and still haven't rearranged the place.

Is the busted A.I. too easy to exploit, or quite opposite - makes everybody (no matter how good a gamer) hit the wall beyond the same point?

I'm much better with the Classic controller than the wiimote controls but thought they worked well. Love that game. That and GW : Waves are my favourite GW games.

Most notably, some of the battle (red) stages. I can check some specific examples when I get home if you want.

Basically, the stages get harder as normal, but once you reach a certain point (around 40 minutes), the difficulty slingshots back to minimum. Enemies spawn very sparsely, and the difficulty never recovers. At this point you can pretty much play as long as you want. So once you reach this point, the high score list is just who wants to sit around for the most hours.

Also it's worth mentioning that there is an absolute maximum for score. There are several people who reached this ceiling. Is the official website not around anymore? I'm having difficulty locating the official leaderboards now.

Just picked this up. CCP seems to be better, although it's a bit irritating that the analogue stick casing is octagonal instead of circular. Dead zone seems pretty large as well, it feels like I gotta go full throttle in order to activate the shot. May be worth learning the nunchuk controls... They were better for Bit.Trip Fate, anyway.
