I thought you would approve of Gurren Lagann's 'manliness' ehehe - is it because it kinda has a kid pilot?

Are there good fighting anime series nowadays? No sarcasm. It's been years but I didn't find Naruto and Bleach, 2 of the biggest modern successors, to be very interesting from the first few episodes I watched. I was a fan of the original Saint Seiya but the recent Saint Seiya Omega can't compare at all in terms of art style or music. I just watched a good deal of Hokuto no Ken 2 a short while ago after Discotek finally localized the 4th and final volume of the original series. While the post-Raoh arcs didn't match the quality from earlier arcs, Hokuto no Ken 2 was nevertheless still captivating. If I'm looking for similar stuff, can I find them in today's anime?

That Moribito clip seemed to have high production values and great animation detail (as is often the case with modern anime), but the bland character design and dark palette are a put off for me. It may be petty ignore a show just because its high quality visuals don't match stylistic expectations but I'm definitely guilty of that and can't help my tastes. I also noticed that the clip used a lot less impact lines than older anime and while the former is certainly more realistic and demanding on the artist, I'm not sure which style I prefer. I'm not really a Yu Yu Hakusho fan either because of the character designs but I have no problem with its fighting, however crude.

The chara designs sucked for that, too (just like with Diebuster), but, yeah, I really did not like the kid pilot premise in Gurren Lagann, which is what most modern animu garbage includes, so I stopped watching after two episodes.

I got Mazinkaiser instead 8)

I don't mean to be pernicity, but isn't Mazinger full on kid pilot stuff? :D - and not that I've seen much Super Robot stuff (yet), but isn't Gurren Lagann supposed to be a pretty blatant homage to that era?

Imma check Mazinkaiser now :)

Kabuto Koji was a kid pilot in Mazinger, but he wasn't drawn like a middle-schooler. I'd say he's closer in style to Uraki Kou than to the kid pilot from Gurren 8)

Gurren

Notice how half the time, the focus is on cutesy, soft-looking, weak characters right outta Pokemon. I thought this was a big robot show - FOCUS ON THE GOD DAMN ROBOTS, THEN!

Mazinger

Big robots blowing s*** up, then a coupla quick flashes of the pilot who waves to the crowd a la Mach A-Go-Go 8)

Character designs for Moribito are great, a change of pace from the usual awful anime fare. But it's not really a fighting anime. While there are some great fights, that's not the show's main focus and there's a lot of slice of life and politics. So if you are just want to see people fighting a lot, you are going to be dissapointed.

If you are looking a shounen fighting anime, I can't be of any help because I'm not into that. Samurai Champloo is the closest I can think of. Some people like Katanagatari; I personally hate it because the episodes are mostly 20 minutes of the characters talking about their strategies and techniques and 1 minute of actual fighting. As for movies, Sword of the Stranger has some neat fights, but you may not like the visuals.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot about Shigurui! I didn't really watch the anime, but the manga is excellent. You may want to give that one a go.

At least in Gurren, the kid grows up.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Okay, even though this was originally aired back in 1999, I got to see this in the early 2000s: Blue Gender. I almost forgot to recommend this series. If you liked Starship Troopers and Aliens kind of action and mayhem, then Blue Gender isn't too far off. Sure, the animation quality is choppy and the chara designs are too plain, bordering on ugly; in this instance, I think those flaws fit the cruel, ruthless, violent, and bleak nature of the programme. It also helps that this was done by the same guy who did Armored Trooper Votoms, so you KNOW how the story may progress 8)

It is one of the best modern anime I have seen.

Its music was also done by Kuniaki Haishima, who did some Macross Zero music, as well as the Monster soundtrack, as well as the (unfortunately) maligned soundtrack to Metroid: Other M.

Yeah, the background music has some weird sound FX. I'm watching some episodes right now and another series I'd compare it to would be Aeon Flux in its level of violence and treatment of its secondary characters 8)
