G Darius- Port problems abound! Any solutions?
G Darius on PS1 looks "right", but it's slowdown is unreal.
The PS2 version plays right, but looks muddy(the Taito Legends 2 version).
This sucks.
So, is there a way to patch TL2, or does this run properly in MAME?
Hell, this game deserves a remake.

I think the game works fine under MAME. I have the PC port (which is a port of the PSX version without the loading times and high quality redbook audio music, you can put it in any CD player) and it also works pretty fine... but under Windows XP. And it has issues with some of the Nvidia drivers (the ones recommended by Siter Skain in his site for RefleX seem to help). I don't know how it fares under Windows 7.
Also, I have no idea how the PC version of Taito Legends handles this either.
Great game by the way. MASSIVE LAZ0R FIGHTS!

The music is still missing in MAME, unemulated (well partially) sound CPU + hardware driving it.
Also MAME's PSX emulation is a disaster, I wouldn't recommend it at all it's very glitchy and needs a lot of work in all areas.

G-Darius on PS1 doesn't have "Slowdowns". Slowdown is something that happens from time to time in a game, when it gets too crowded and the game runs slower than usual.G Darius on PS1 looks "right", but it's slowdown is unreal.
G-Darius on PS1 has some "Fastups". In some rare moments when the screen is empty, the game will run faster than usual.

The game is in a permanent slowdown all the time. It's still very playable IMO, as I finished it a dozen of times on PS1. But the real arcade experience certainly this is not.

Re: G Darius- Port problems abound! Any solutions?
If you play the PSX port on an emulator, it seems to run at normal speed (faster than on the console) and you get the boss rush mode etc. DJ Incompetent did his all boss run this way.
Agreed though, definitely deserves a remake.. G-Darius HD would have been better than Raystorm HD anyway :p

Muddy? Have you watched beyond the FMV intro, because I agree that looks muddy alright. The game itself is pretty clean and looks fine. Complaints about the visuals is ridiculous unless it was a really glaring flaw - try seeing what it does well instead of what it does poorly. I enjoy the PS2 version and Taito Legends 2 in general and I think it's more than satisfactory in terms of what it does and how it looks.evil_ash_xero wrote:The PS2 version plays right, but looks muddy(the Taito Legends 2 version).

If you're so sore for a "clean" looking version, go with the Windows conversion.

Hmm I have the PS2 one going through component cables, and it's definitely not muddy. It's at least much sharper than the low res arcade original!

Re: G Darius- Port problems abound! Any solutions?
The muddiness the OP refers to is the bilinear filtering used on Taito Classics. I notice it too but its not a deal breaker by any means. Still, a remake is deinitely due for this game. The amount of weapons possibilities alone throw this game over the top.
Re: G Darius- Port problems abound! Any solutions?
I believe that's only on the 2d games and the others are natively high res. I can double check though (US TL2 disc).Darkseed wrote:The muddiness the OP refers to is the bilinear filtering used on Taito Classics. I notice it too but its not a deal breaker by any means. Well, i'll say this, it absolutely does not look the same as the PS1 version, which is cleaner and brighter. I don't have vision problems, or mental ones either.

The PS1 game is most definitely not brighter, take off the sunglasses. The notable differences are lack of scan-lines and different screen size on Taito Legends 2, otherwise the colours look more vibrant on PS2. Quit whinning about the scan-line loss and play the game you baby. If you have such a hard on for the PS1 game visuals, again, play the PC version which is close and definitely not as slow. The PlayStation game feels like easy mode when you go to TL2, and honestly accuracy in terms of game-play is pretty much all that should matter if you like the game. The visuals do not go far enough to ruin the experience so lighten up.evil_ash_xero wrote:Well, i'll say this, it absolutely does not look the same as the PS1 version, which is cleaner and brighter. Clean = everything in the background looks like a mash of random pixels and all the textures bend?evil_ash_xero wrote:Well, i'll say this, it absolutely does not look the same as the PS1 version, which is cleaner and brighter. I don't have vision problems, or mental ones either.

I stand by my statement that it is brighter and less muddy looking. I run the games on the same system. I would like to see some screenshots, but i'm not taking them. And of course it runs tons better on the PS2 version. I just wish it looked as good as the PS1 version, or at least had not filters applied.
I'll make sure to quit whining and grown up, as you put it. Or maybe not.
This is a weird place sometimes. "I think this game has lag"..."go to hell! you're retarded!".

I agree with you, visuals on PS2 are upscaled and look crap. Have you considered going the PCB route? It's still the best version of the game out there.

No. That's a bit out of my territory, since I don't own a cab, and don't really plan on getting one.

It occurs to me - ps2 players tried changing the texture filtering in the ps2 driver options; any difference?

I only think that applies to PS1 games.

Solution Found.
If anyone is still interested in playing G-Darius in a more arcade-accurate fashion, I just came up with a solution.
I'll have the full instructions up later on when I finish writing them up.. I was just browsing this thread and saw many of the same emotions I hold for this game reflected here.
The route I will be sharing involves the PS2 version in "Taito Legends 2", and requires the newly released PCSX2 1.0.0. I'm sure many of you have tried emulating this with limited success in the past, as some elements were broken/nasty.. but as of today, that is fixed and G-Darius is going to be playable on your PC in a very compelling form =)
Yes this thread is a year+ old, but no solution has come up until now, apparently.. and G-Darius is timeless ^_^

Good to hear. Any good guide on usage of PCSX let alone usage for G-Darius would be much appreciated, I'm sure.

The guide is up: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=42521
It's a bit lengthier than I wanted, but written so that people unfamiliar with PCSX2 can easily get everything set up.

This is most noticeable during the Queen Fossil fight, where she fires that barrage of vertical-moving missiles at you.Shatterhand wrote: G-Darius on PS1 has some "Fastups". In some rare moments when the screen is empty, the game will run faster than usual.![]()
While she fires them (off the game-plane), the game is crawling along, and when they get to the screen, all the sudden things speed up tremendously and you die because you don't have much time to dodge!
I still love my PS1 G-Darius though (probably the second-best game in the series imo).
I've actually noticed (though I can't confirm it right now) that the PS1 G-Darius runs smoother on an actual PS1 console - the slowdown was worse on a slim PS2. At least, it felt that way.
It made me pretty happy to play the game without some of the slowdown, though the DaDa stage still sends the machine for a loop.
