Just stumbled upon http://taisei-project.org/, which is fan-made, Open Source clone of the Touhou series.

So... sorta like Seihou Project, except open source, or danmakufu scripts? Or is it a remake of one of the games? Site isn't clear.

why do you say that?
nothing wrong with having solid open source shooter engines out there, means people can do what they want within the confines of the engine, or the ones feeling ambitious can take the code and do something outrageous
you risk fragmentation yes, people creating different versions of the engine which are completely incompatible, but that's a risk of any open project but IMHO all good community driven projects should be open, it keeps them alive and gets them ported to all kinds of cool places.
