A vote for Leo is a vote for AMAZING MUSIC. I think all three of these are going to be relatively similar playing experiences, and Leo is the easiest to look at and has the best soundtrack by FAR.

Leo is yet another game where a single death destroys all your chances of a good score.
Salamander 2 on the other hand is a really fun game and it actually has a more involved scoring system and no checkpoints. (and I have no idea why would anyone even consider Black Heart)

Not the way V-V does. Leo gives you a million per life upon clearing the game, so clearing the game with just one death would still give you a pretty decent score that would beat 90% (at least) of the participants, I'm sure.Erppo wrote:Leo is yet another game where a single death destroys all your chances of a good score.
Also, I assumed we'd be playing the version of Leo that doesn't have checkpoints.

Black Heart has a surprising amount of defenders. It is very much like Hacha Mecha Fighter, except with dropping coins and different patterns and...stuff.
Salamander 2 might be fun to play actually...still leaning towards Leo though.

It was composed by IIDX's Maeda!

Well, it might even up the playing ground because no one has played it seriously before (at least I sincerely hope so). There would also be more no shows raising the ranking for anyone who at least submit a score.Erppo wrote: (and I have no idea why would anyone even consider Black Heart)
If Leo and Salamander don't use checkpoints, I think I'm fine with either one.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm much more concerned about the game being enjoyable than whether people have played it before. Usually if plenty of people know how to play a game well, it's because it's a game worth knowing.

But that's exactly why the kusoge tournaments (and Dragon Week) were/are so entertainingSapz wrote:I dunno about you guys, but I'm much more concerned about the game being enjoyable than whether people have played it before. R-Type Leo is ~20min, Salamander 2 is ~40min, Black Heart is something.

Agreed, in my case at least. I've got half a dozen versions lying around, from 96 to 146, and none of them can get 100% without frameskip. I'm open to compiling some more, but this is something to keep in mind.Samurai Fox wrote:Salamander 2 may be a problem for some people, performance-wise, if they're using a current version of MAME. Core 2 Duo at 2.33.
It may be that MAME's performance on Mac OS is not as good; if this does get picked I'll try something else.
The version which worked best was around 124. I may try sdlmame around there, instead of MAME OS X (which has had some performance issues for me).

If you're using a mac you're probably better off emulating the ps1 port of salamander 2. The old mame versions don't run natively on intel macs so they're slower than they should be

Paperboy would have to be in Isometric week, which should never happen due to the remote possibility of having to play Viewpoint.

Re: STGT'12 Week 3 Voting: Hori Week
I am curious about Sala2's 2nd loop. It has different music! You have to admit that is bad ass. And a great way to get the player compelled to play it.
Not the first time Konami does special things with their loops. In Gradius IV for example, the environments and stage designs are shuffled slightly for a tighter challenge in the 2nd loop and on.

R-Type Leo is a real memorizer clear and eventually boils down to having max life stock and killing everything/as much as possible. Salamander 2 has more flexibility, has a far more challenging 2nd loop and clocks in relatively short. Black Heart I know nothing. S2 or BH could be good choices this time around.

After actually trying Black Heart, I reckon any team that actually picks it should be made to fight Gigafacer with an R-Type hitbox.
