Does Parasite Eve count as JRPG? I enjoyed that one.

EDIT: Ok, I'll admit it, I also enjoyed Dragon Warrior 7 (Dragon Quest 7).

Wasn't a great fan of DQVII myself. Funny thing - a friend of mine played it for three hours, got to his first fight (before which there were no save options I think), and died in it - never played it again. DQV & VIII are amazing games though, especially V.

Out of interest, which ones have you played? I can understand not getting along with the Tactics Ogres, FFT's and Disgaeas of the world which while fun necessitate creating custom characters and levelling them up(which can be lots of fun or horrifingly dull).

But in the really fun SRPG's, all of your characters turn up via the storyline(as happens in the two I mentioned before), and tactics come into play far more then grinding. The Shining Force 3 games on the saturn are pretty much the kings of this subgenre.

Speaking of Suikoden II, this is one of my biggest regret of not getting while the price was still accessible. And after all these years people still singing praise about makes it even worse :(

Partially, it was a joint production between Square's US and Japan branches.

I've tried a few ... don't really remember specifically which ones, but in general for some reason strategy gameplay doesn't really click with me. I really tried to like things like Front Mission and even tried Namco X Capcom because I thought the fighting game mechanics and insane character roster would help me enjoy it more, but not so much.

The jury is still out on FFXII Revenant Wings ...

I don't think the battle system in NxC was particularly well received to begin with. Front Mission games I know from experience can be quite spotty.

Doesn't _sound_ like you've played any really good SRPG's, so I'd still recommend Vandal Hearts when you run low on recommendations. If you don't like VH, then they're definitely not your thing though. I'll end my SRPG evangelising now :)

The ones I recall playing before I got fed up with the 1 hour wall of text intros was:
Chrono Cross, hated it at the time as I was expecting more Chrono Trigger. Need to replay it.
Final Fantasy VII, haven't played it since 1998
Suikoden, tons of characters and great story
Vagrant Story, I loved the shit out of this game.

Chrono Cross tried to be a jRPG like Suikoden or Shining Force, but failed to make me give a damn about the majority of its numerous characters. Failed to become Chrono Trigger's worthy successor as well, the engine being slow as it is making quite a difference.
By the way, the PSX port of Chrono Trigger is ruined by the loading times. I don't believe it couldn't have been optimised.

My faves:

Final Fantasy Anthology
Final Fantasy Chronicles
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Ogre Battle
SaGa Frontier
Tactics Ogre
Xenogears
-
Langrisser I & II
Langrisser IV & V Final Edition
Neo Super Robot Wars
Super Robot Wars Complete Box
Super Robot Wars IV Scramble
TearRingSaga

RPGs I'd recommend for you (since it seems you're looking for more action-oriented stuff):

Alundra (original only)
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Deception I-III (if you dislike one, ignore the rest)
Parasite Eve 1 & 2 (very different; try both)
Star Ocean 2
The Granstream Saga
Valkyrie Profile

Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean are great, much deeper than the usual JRPG fare (they even try a bit to be RPGs!) but, damn, they sure needed an option to skip cutscenes. Long spell animations can get annoying.

Wild Arms so far is fantastic, definitely scratching the itch.

Absolutely. I was going to recommend them in this thread, but then I thought they might not be stereotypically JRPG-ish enough. The first one in particular is one of my most fondly remembered PS1 gaming experiences.

Only if you like circle-strafing every goddamn enemy in the game to death and monotonous dungeon crawling. Play the Battle Network games if you haven't instead, they're far deeper and more rewarding experiences.

I forgot about them! Definitely recommendable if you are into dungeon crawling. Only Megaman games I like.
