Cave games on Ouya?
Just wondering what you guys think about the possibility of Cave games on Ouya...
Were their Android ports well-received overall? Any journalists here willing to ask them about it?
I'm *this* close to backing a unit. Cave support would do it for me.

NO.Were their Android ports well-received overall?
I'll just say that some people have mistaken them for unlicensed bootleg versions.

However, I think it's fair to say that a large part of the reason people didn't like the ports is because of the touchscreen controls.Op Intensify wrote:NO.Were their Android ports well-received overall?

If they could be played on ACHOO with a controller (or even a joystick??) then I'm sure they'd be much better.

Re: Cave games on Ouya?
well those versions on google play were ghastly but those hacked ones released in japan were pretty alright.Op Intensify wrote:NO.Were their Android ports well-received overall?

Re: Cave games on Ouya?
Is it safe to say that the Ouya should be powerful enough to play the latest cave-games? If they are programmed right, that is.

Assuming it's successful, there will be plenty to go around once the software library grows a bit. No reason to be a console hardware beta tester, especially if there's nothing that catches your eye yet.denpanosekai wrote:I'm *this* close to backing a unit. Cave support would do it for me.

Re: Cave games on Ouya?
it has a quad core tegra t33. the same is in the asus transformer tablet. it is supposed to be around the speed of an ipad 2. so assuming that the ipad is able to cope with cave games than ouya should be as well.Drachenherz wrote:Is it safe to say that the Ouya should be powerful enough to play the latest cave-games? i'd rather be afraid of it not being able to handle ANTHING ELSE apart from cave games. this won't be a console for hi-end-graphics gaming and i personally won't bother with another machine that i will be able to play angry birds with.

Well, this is basically the first modern Android setup without multitasking, so all the power can optimize toward the game instead of stuttering with 12 background apps updating at all times.
I imagine it just can't handle super-detailed-open-world sandbox shit like Skyrim or Fallout 3. That's about it?

Hard to say. The GEE/GMO-Ones were quite good port-wise (as far as I can tell), unfortunately they weren't really accessible outside Japan. The non-GEE/GMO-ones, well... let me put it this way: I'd rather play Superman 64, blindfolded, using only one of my feet - which has been crushed by a jackhammer - to control the game.denpanosekai wrote:Were their Android ports well-received overall?

any smart microwave or refrigerator if more powerful than CV1000 aka SH3 hardwareDrachenherz wrote:Is it safe to say that the Ouya should be powerful enough to play the latest cave-games?

I mean any more or less modern device is many times faster than old rusty 100Mhz SH3 CPU + blitter GPU (slower than 15 year old Nvidia Riva).
so yes, its powerful enough.
Re: Cave games on Ouya?
Cave games will be available on the Ouya the same way they're "available" on the PC, via emulation
. Don't expect Cave to support Ouya officially. Staying ghetto is part of their business strategy

Don't waste your money on OUYA. Note that since you'd be donating through Kickstarter, you aren't actually ordering a console, you are just donating money. The OUYA has a tiny chance of ever coming to market at best. And if the marketing execs that dreamed it up decide to take the money and buy a ticket to Sri Lanka, you are screwed.
If you have $99 burning a hole in your pocket and want to see more CAVE games, donate the money to CAVE.

Yes. You are a genius. If I were Yves Behar, I would totally forfeit my entire design career for a 1.5 million cut of a big'ol kickstarter scam.sunburstbasser wrote:Don't waste your money on OUYA. Chances that it was all a scam from the beginning are small, but chances that it'll actually ever get to market are also small. And even if it does, it's just another platform that plays Android games. Big fuckin deal.DJ Incompetent wrote:Yes. You are a genius. In addition, you're nuts if you think they're going to give top billing to anything but already popular games and franchises. Guess what's not on that list? CAVE.

Re: Cave games on Ouya?
Thus far the biggest games set for the Ouya are Minecraft, yet another port of the DS remake of Final Fantasy III, and standard Namco Bandai stuff. It's unlikely that you'll see AAA franchises like Call of Duty on this thing (outside of OnLive streaming), and they're trying to push this as an indie-friendly console rather than a major competitor for the current console manufacturers, so I'd say the fact that Cave probably has no interest in publishing for the Ouya is a bigger hurdle than promotion.Udderdude wrote:In addition, you're nuts if you think they're going to give top billing to anything but already popular games and franchises.
Even if they did want to release STG ports for the platform for whatever reason, going from the pledges given, the initial install base for the Ouya will be 58,221. I'm going to guess that means 58,220 people who wouldn't have any interest in Cave games in the first place, and one person who might be interested if it somehow happened but isn't getting his hopes up for reasons given. I don't see any situation where this would work well and be cost-effective for Cave.

I guess my first question is why you're so against an Android without resource-suckin' multitasking and background apps. Is it really that shitty to build for like trap15 said, or are you saying it just has awful horsepower?Udderdude wrote:Chances that it was all a scam from the beginning are small, but chances that it'll actually ever get to market are also small. I'd rather play Sphere Shift, Rotator, and Runner with an Ouya controller than iOS.

Re: Cave games on Ouya?
Ouya can't even get a webpage set up properly. This is stuff that should have been done weeks ago, but they still seem intent on just coasting. They do have a link to take your money up, though.
They removed the direct links, but you can still see all the other pages pretty easily.
http://www.ouya.tv/legal/
The concept behind Ouya is great, a cheap console that can play simple games with an actual controller. But the people behind it are not programmers or developers, they are marketers. Julie is a corporate yes-lady who promises everything even though there is no realistic way she can deliver.

If I thought this thing had a chance of making it to market, I'd be cool with it. I would enjoy playing something like Space Invaders Infinity Gene on it, and having a controller would make it a huge step up from playing on my phone.
But I don't see Ouya coming to market, certainly not in their timeframe.

Re: Cave games on Ouya?
One big thing that made me raise my eyebrows at the Ouya is the fact that their promotion claimed that it was slated for the console, when Mojang came out right afterwards and said "uh, no it's not, what are you talking about?" The Ouya guys even went on record after the fact that Minecraft was coming "if we could prove that we could make a great product," basically confirming that they were lying in their promo text.Bananamatic wrote:minecraft: the console

They may very well have the best intentions, but the ambitiousness of this project, combined with the apparent habitual over-hyping of this thing, makes me want very much to lean on the side of measured skepticism.
Of course, even if it did come out, I still don't see the need for an "Android-powered OPEN HACKABLE CONSOLE" aside from appealing to the FOSS-purist sperglords
