Sad thing is that it's not a completely unreasonable price. That is a genuinely impressive and valuable collection.

Funny thing is, I knew this would sell. I expected it to. Some rich guy who no longer sees money as a finite commodity just thought 'why not' - more bang for your buck than a painting or something.

But I always figured half the enjoyment of amassing a collection was the finding and acquisition, then the chance to inspect and enjoy playing. There's too much choice all at once, he may as well have paid for a torrent of complete romsets.

Would I trade all those days scraping the best stuff from the game store I used to work in, those rainy outings in Akihabara and the warehouses on the outskirts of Fuji, or last minute auction wins to instead have everything delivered wholesale, one-fell-swoop into my lap?

Not for a million bucks.

Half the fun is digging for deals and finds, but the fact of the matter is that as an adult with a full time job, I just don't have the time for it any more. I barely even have time to play and enjoy my games these days, let alone go digging through bins and yard sales. Not that I don't still do that from time to time, but generally I'd rather pay more money to just have something I can play, than spend a bunch of time looking for it and not have time to play it.

The fact is for a collection of that size, the price more than makes up for the amount of effort that would need to be exert to gather everything individually..

I have that same feeling. I think for people like us, we find time a lot more precious since we work. So if a game isn't interesting it feels too much of a waste of time to bother.

Ever since I started making money, I've been more stingy with it as well. I pay close attention whether something is worth my money or time, even though the price is really a drop in a bucket.

On the flip side, I don't feel bad paying for DLC or paying a good sum for indy games that I feel took a lot of care and effort to make. I feel if any game can get my interest, it's well worth my money. Especially since so many developers these days make games like shit.

Anywho - I can relate to the sentiment in this line of comments, but I'd prefer to look at it as enjoying gaming differently, as opposed to enjoying it less. I'm pretty sure I'm more passionate about the hobby than I have ever been... Even though my time spent actually gaming is far less than it was in my youth.

The item was sold for $55,000! That money could have been spent on my tuition.

Apparently the original owner Jason Wilson (aka DreamTR) is the same guy who owns 16,000ish unique games and the Game Galaxy Arcade in Nashville. DreamTR was interviewed by PriceCharting which was linked by the ebay seller. There's a picture which shows what could be the same nes cartridge that was sold just earlier since it has the same HP NOA writing.
Apparently the ebay seller met with Jason and sold to him the cartridge as seen in this nintendoage thread.

Still, that money could have been spent on my tuition...

So this Zelda dev cart was previously sold on ebay in 2008. It sucks very much that you can't look up old auctions, but I bet that it didn't go for more than a couple of hundred dollars (if that).

I think we're in the midst of a gaming bubble. People who grew up playing these games are now old enough to feel nostalgic about them. They're also old enough to have careers, and some have been successful enough to have money to burn. Similar booms, busts, and trends can be seen if you look at the historic values of other collectible toys... It also doesn't hurt that it's currently considered "hip" to be nerdy.

Seriously. It seems like half the commercials I see portraying "cool guys" are geeky/emo looking dudes with glasses and weak beards. One comercial in particular always gets me: it's for some college and there's this guy yammering on about how "I don't wanna sit through lectures, I wanna learn my way, blah blah blahhhhh.... and come to find out I'm not alone." So the whole selling point starts out as "this emo looking dude is so hip and unique! He's too cool to be like everyone else!" and then he realizes there are other "hip and unique" folks, therefore nullifying his uniqueness. Marketing fail.
