Anyone planning to pick up Chaos Field for the GC?
Anyone planning to pick up Chaos Field for the GC?
I think I'm going to do so. It will really be a change of pace, especially considering that I have not bought a new title for my GC in almost a year. The release date is still pegged for 10/18 in the US, and I've almost thought of doing a preorder.
Any more news on the title?

Fuck Chaos Field.
Seriously. I'm sick of hearing about it. It sucked bovine gonads, and it's an insult to see such a piece of shit ported to the GC, when plenty of Cave shooters never made it over here. Again, fuck Chaos Field. It's a piss-poor Radiant Silvergun wannabe anyway.
On a related note, when the fuck is Treasure gonna re-release Radiant Silvergun on a next-gen console? It's about goddamn time. >:/

I had no idea that this game could elicit such harsh criticism. All input is appreciated! As for myself, I'm not expecting a spectacular game, but based on everything I have read, I do think Chaos Field will be a competent release. If nothing else, its a good way to support a genre that is almost dead in the United States.
And if it isn't, I'm only out $25-$30 and I still have another addition to my library.
Which brings me to my next thought, and it sort of goes along with what BUHA has said. Perhaps with a relatively strong showing, small time publishers may be more willing to draw from the huge well of Japanese shooters and start releasing them here. With minimal production and translation costs, these shooters should be a small-fry publisher's dream. I would LOVE to see any of the DDP series come out on console in the states, as well as some old favorites that have yet to be put out on the next gen systems. And like Zweihander said, how much effort would it be to release a version of Radient Silvergun for the GC, PS2, or XB in the US? Granted, it wouldn't be a million-seller, but I would think it could clear 50-75K easily.

Chaos Field is 3D. Boom, theres your answer
In the eyes of most mainstream gamers, cave titles AND chaos field are probably equally mediocre, although obviously anybody who has played them knows that chaos field is the most worthless crap title ever released (well ok, maybe not, but it's still up there on the list)

Why the fixation on Cave games in this thread? It would be great to get a port of Border Down here in the US, and I think such a port would have a much better chance of success here than a port of ESPGaluda. I agree: it would have been nice to have a DDP DOJ release here. Since I already have the game, I would mostly be interested to see how the public would react to it. But the focus on Cave in this thread is, to my mind, a bit arbitrary: there are LOTS of games I'd like to see get US releases.

I laughed my ass off at that one. XD True, I may be harsh toward it (and I'm SO glad I acquired an "evaluation copy", rather than shell out $60+shipping for that piece of crap), but I have my reasons.Accutron wrote:Didn't you hear? Zweihander's parents were killed by a copy of Chaos Field.
Then again, maybe I've just been spoiled by the excellent games from Treasure, Cave, and others... In other words, comparing Chaos Field to, say, DDPDOJ is (IMHO) like comparing Project S-11 to Solar Striker. It aspires to model itself after a standard-setting classic, yet fails miserably.
The controls were horrible, the field-changing thing (as sloppily-done as it was) was about the only redeeming quality, and the Shmups.com review (WAY overrated, 7 out of 10) got my hyped up for a MAJOR let-down. I haven't felt so cheated since Devil May Cry 2, and THAT is saying something.
I didn't mean to turn this into a MileStone vs. Cave/Treasure/everyone else war, I was merely giving an example: shitty 3-D games are apparently more worthwhile than ANYTHING with less than three dimensions, according to the American gaming industry. My bad for believing otherwise. :/
Milestone is a young company with MUCH to learn; sure, they throw in the styles of Radiant (sword), Ikaruga (field-changing), RayForce (lock-ons), and a general Alfa System/ Cave overall mood (disgusting ammounts of bullets in the later rounds), but in the end, they lost sight of what makes a shmup memorable: something all its own.
Einhander: grab enemy gunpods.
Cave: hoarding enemy bullets as coins.
Treasure: sheer imagination and perfection.
Gradius: classic power-up system.
R-Type: Force tactics.
RayForce: lock-on lasers.
Darius: giant fucking FISH.
Border Down: alternate routes and the G-Darius Laser Of Doom.
Proto-shmups: the deities of the past which influence the tomorrow.
Chaos Field: ....??????????????
My point is, 20 years from now, what will Chaos Field be remembered for?
My apologies for the long rant. ^^; And no disrespect to people supporting it; true, shmups are all but dead in the current U.S. gaming market, and it needs something to spark an interest again. Chaos Field may very well segregate rather than attract: hardcore shmuppers may hate it, and newcomers may very well dismiss all shmups as "another Chaos Field".

Zwei compliments for ZweiHander:
Eins, you have one of the coolest names on the forum (maybe zweiter place, after BulletMagnet).
Zwei, your argument is very persuasive. In spite of your argument, and Rob's claim that Chaos Field is "tragic" in its badness, I'm still going to get it for all the obvious reasons.

i can easily see how one could be very disapointed by chaos field if he was hyped up for it. personnaly i bought it with low expectations and my initial impressions were negative, i only continued to play it because of the music, then only it began to grow on me.Zweihander wrote: My apologies for the long rant. ^^; And no disrespect to people supporting it; true, shmups are all but dead in the current U.S. gaming market, and it needs something to spark an interest again. it's not a game that you can play the wrong way and still have fun with (unlike say radiant), if you don't play for score it will be like an average doujin. still, it's not complete shit by far, and it has its moments (the 2 last stages are the best).
not that you have to like it or anything though, but i'll keep an eye on milestone

Cause it had a top soundtrack? Being a game that the blinkered few didnt like? Cause it did not save high-scores?
I have it on DC, and its not the greatest ever shooter, but I do really enjoy the game it has a raw edge which coupled with teh music playing though a large amp makes for a satisfying shump experience..
As to a GC version, if there was a Pal GC relaease i would give it a punt as the GC version is ment to be different to the DC one

Yes, definitely picking it up. I tried out the DC version once and was disappointed by some sloppiness in the interface and all the slowdown, but the game is interesting enough to me that I'd like to play the polished-up GC version. I like the scoring mechanisms quite a bit, and the music is fantastic. It's a better example of 'shooting love' than a certain other Naomi-original shooter.
Plus, it'll be cheap!

I have the DC import too. Can't say I particularly like or dislike it - it just seems very average to me. I do like the music though.
Isn't the new US GC version supposed to have more improvements on top of the already tweaked Jap GC release? If they can further tighten up some aspects of it, it might be a nice budget purchase..?

Agreed, I meant the sloppy handling of the double swords in Chaos Field. Though stylish, it did lead me numerous times to be too preoccupied with slashing in defense, until the boss eventually timed out. The ability to shoot limited shots during the slashing would have worked. :/ThirdStrike wrote:Radiant Silvergun and Chaos Field are not the same.
Radiant Silvergun is in another league.
Also, @ all comments on the soundtrack: Yes, C.F. DID have a very addictive soundtrack. Now, if I could get ahold of the OST (legally or otherwise) I'd jam that shit 24/5 (since i do stuff on the weekends

@ keeping an eye on Milestone: Yes, I have faith they'll eventually make something that'll be herralded(sp?) for years to come, they're just... young. Animals, including humans, do stupid shit as youngsters, but later become aged with wisdom, and make smart decisions. Let's hope companies like Milestone will fall into this pattern.

@ the Gamecube version: I like the idea of actual stages, or at least warm-up enemies before the bosses. One thing that could use improving is the return-to-Order-Field timing. You basically have a 5-second rule, but it would help to see an on-screen display, ala Giga Wing's Reflect Force timer, or Mars Matrix's similar gauge(sp?).
Oh yeah...
EDIT:
Why, danke. ^_^ You make me blush.professor ganson wrote:Zwei compliments for ZweiHander:

eh. GC port probably won't be nearly as good as the DC version (GC butchered Ikaruga...), and if CF has to be ported, why not port it to something else? Why GC, and for that matter why not a different game? Where's Espgaluda, or the new DDP. SO MANY import shooters will probably never get a western release, simply due to the fact publishers tell the customers what they want. I'm so fucking sick of great shooters not making it to the west. Betting every person on this forum feels the same. *random cursing* Also, on a side note: I like Chaos Field. It's not the best shooter out there, but I like it. People shit on this game time, and time again. It's pretty good if you actually play through it...

The JP GC version has been out for months now, and it's better than the DC version. The DC port's slowdown has been cleaned up, it has memory card score-saving support, and there's a new arrange mode with small enemies between bosses.superhitachi4 wrote:eh. also consider how much it would cost to get the rights to a cave game for the western market. cave is HUGE. milestone is tiny.superhitachi4 wrote:Where's Espgaluda, or the new DDP. I have no sig whatsoever.
