Issue with NEC Multisync CRT

Post by SePh1r0tH »

Hello just a quick question, I recently purchased an NEC XP29 Plus to play some shmups in tate mode. When I turn on the TV I can hear the fan turn on and it makes that static noise that most crts do when you power them on. Other then that I get nothing, no picture at all. Any idea what the issue might be? Thanks a lot!

What timing, I'm having an issue with my monitor (although mines an Xtra) for some PCB's I'm trying to play... I'll make a separate thread though.

Can you describe your setup in a bit more detail? Like how you have everything hooked up in the back of the monitor? The screen will be dark until you have a signal running through it, then you'll be allowed to enter the menu and adjust the picture. The only thing you can do when you power it on is switch between the various inputs.

Could you provide more info? What do you have hooked up to it? It has multiple inputs. Did you get the controller that comes with the tv as well so you can switch inputs?

It didn't come with the remote. I tried both VGA and svideo. I just can't seem to get any display at all for some reason. Can't even switch inputs because the screen just stays dark as if it were off.

Okay so I have my super gun hooked up with VGA and I actually have sound going now. I'm hoping the screen turns on. Do you use any of the dip switches? I read the manual and have 2 and 7 up.

I just have dip 7 up on mine. Quick question, when you change between different inputs can you hear the monitor switching between them? It makes an audible clicking type noise.

Ended up figuring out what the problem was with mine as I was also having difficulty playing some PCB's on my supergun, an Extron sync processor fixed the unstable, flickering image. Super happy at the moment! :D

WOOOO, opened it up with my dad and got it working. The motherboard needed for the CRT was not even attached. 2 of the corners were broken right off. Attached them and it worked! I have some pics if anyone is interested. Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it! Soo happy right now

Congrats! Let us know if you need any additional help hooking that bad boy up. It's pretty straight-forward for an RGB setup with most consoles. This monitor will accept whatever you throw at it basically, so have fun! :D

I need help with my NEC XP29 Plus. I recently got my Sega Saturn scart and BNC adapter with Audio. Does anybody know how to DISABLE SYNC ON GREEN!?!?! When I first connected it, I couldn't see anything until I switched the black (sync) cable with teh Green cable and the image appeared. However the quality of the video didn't look so great and the colours were extremely dull. I tried messing with the DIP switches but I've had NO LUCK! I even read the manual and I could not find anything to solve this problem. I really wanna play my saturn in all its RGB glory! I've not had problems with my dreamcast through but I might fear that if I tamper with the monitor too much, I might mess it up. I'd be grateful for any help that I can get.

do you get greens at all? sounds like the sync and green cable markers on your bnc cable might be mismatched.
if you're getting greens you'll have to play around with the internal settings (RGB gains, brightness, contrast) to get a good picture. it's possible that some parts of the crt are so worn out that you just can't get a good contrast/vibrant picture anymore though

I think I am getting ALL the colours. I mean, it just looks dulled out. I contacted the maker of the SCART and he told me that my monitor is "sync on green" and I REALLY wanna disable it. I actually plugged the green and sync cable in the correct places but it gives me this, I dunno how to describe it, "vertically scrolling... weird , messed up picture". Think it would be a good idea to post a video on it? It is really hard to describe.

the monitor is definitely not sync on green only. the rolling picture is because of a sync issue

actually, it's possible that the monitor only accepts raw sync while your saturn outputs composite sync. you'll have to get a sync stripper (like the syncstrike from arcadeforge) to solve that problem then.
i know those shops that sell scart to BNC cables often also sell these cables with a sync stripper included, but i think these might not work with all consoles because some don't feed enough power to the sync stripper to work. my syncstrike won't function with my saturn if i don't use the syncstrike's power supply

edit: actually, maybe you'd better disregard everything i've been saying until you've looked into sync on green. i thought sync on green is only used with component signals, but if that is the case you shouldn't be getting a picture at when switching the green and sync wires (unless they are marked incorrectly!). i can't help you out of sync on green should be a thing with rgb signals too.

I found out the problem. The default settings of the "RGB" were bad. I had to change the RGB levels to match those of "video 1" and it looks near perfect. The reds aren't as bright but that is not a problem for me. I've always wondered why the colors of Composite looked better and now I know why. The SCART quality is noticeably better but not by a whole lot like I though and that may be because its AV output is really good. I even checked my older TV's and I saw that the AV in the NEC was a LOT sharper. The n64 looks like crap on AV, I hope that the SCART quality will look better on that as well. I
